How do I get my website ranked in ChatGPT search results?
Let OpenAI's search crawler in, then make your pages say plainly what you sell, what it costs and who it is for. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks search results on several factors it does not list, and that placement is not guaranteed. So there are two checks to pass: one technical, which OpenAI documents, and one about your words. My own site passed the first with 100 out of 100 and was named in 0 of 10 answers.
I run AI CMO Studio, and the two free tools I mention below are ours. What OpenAI and Google say here is linked to their own pages, checked on 16 October 2026.
Is there such a thing as ranking in ChatGPT search?
Yes, though not as a page of ten links. OpenAI's help page on web search says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors meant to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. It does not say what the factors are. What a buyer sees is one answer with a few sources under it, so the real question is not which position you hold but whether you are in it at all.
The same page sets the condition for being eligible: allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site, and make sure your host or CDN lets through traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses. It also says ChatGPT sometimes rewrites a question into searches it sends to partner search providers, and it names Microsoft and Shopify among them. Microsoft runs Bing, which is why the checklist at the end has a Bing step.
How do I check whether ChatGPT mentions my website?
By hand first, before you change anything, so you have something to compare against later.
01
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in a fresh chat
A temporary or logged-out chat, so you get the answer a stranger gets rather than one shaped by your own history.
02
Ask what a buyer asks before they know your name
Who's a good <your service> in <your town>?orWhat's the best tool for <the problem you solve>?03
Write down who is named, and what each answer says about them
Services, prices, location: the words the answer actually uses.
04
Open the named sites next to yours
Do they state what they sell, what it costs and who it is for in plain words on the page? Does yours?
Picture a solo consultant whose homepage says “tailored solutions for growing businesses”. If the competitors named in the answers state a price and a client type on the page, that difference is the to-do list.
Why isn't my website in ChatGPT's answers when the technical side is perfect?
Because the technical side only makes a site readable. When I checked aicmostudio.ai on 9 September 2026, it scored 100 out of 100 on the machine-readable half (llms.txt, schema, robots rules) and was named in 0 of 10 answers. I wrote that check up in Why doesn't ChatGPT mention your website?
An answer about which business to choose is assembled from pages all over the web that discuss businesses like yours, and from whatever the assistant fetches in the moment. Your own pages are the part of that you can change today.
What should my website say to show up in ChatGPT?
The facts an answer needs, in plain sentences, on the page where a buyer would look for them. In text, not only in images or sliders:
- What you sell, in one sentence: “We do bookkeeping for freelancers with 1–10 clients.”
- What it costs, with real figures, or what it starts from.
- Who it is for, and who it is not for.
- Where you work, if location matters.
- How you differ from the alternatives, stated as a fact you can back up.
Compare two sentences. “Flexible packages to suit your needs” cannot be quoted by anyone. “Bookkeeping for freelancers with 1–10 clients, from $99 a month” can be lifted straight into an answer.
Is my website blocking ChatGPT?
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. A Disallow there, or a security plugin that blocks every “AI bot” at once, takes you out.
Each OpenAI crawler is set separately. You can allow OAI-SearchBot for search and still disallow GPTBot, which collects content for training, and search is not affected. If your host or CDN runs bot protection, check that it lets through the IP addresses OpenAI lists at openai.com/searchbot.json.

Does an llms.txt file help?
It costs almost nothing, so I add one, but it is worth knowing what it is and is not. llms.txt is a convention from llmstxt.org for a plain markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt: what you do, your key pages, the facts worth stating. Google's AI optimization guide says outright that Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so on Google it neither helps nor harms.
My own site had one and still scored zero mentions. The useful way to think of it is as the tidy version of what your pages should already say.
The free llms.txt generator writes the file from up to eleven of your pages in under a minute, with no account. Read it before you publish: if the file makes your offer sound vague, your pages do too.
How long before ChatGPT mentions my business?
For access, about a day: OpenAI's crawler page says it can take around 24 hours from a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust. For being named, nobody can honestly give you a date. It depends on what your pages and other people's pages say, and on how the question is worded.
Watch your analytics rather than the calendar. Visits from links in ChatGPT's answers show up with chatgpt.com as the source, so you will see them when they start.
How do I get my website ranked in ChatGPT search results this week?
- Run the check above and save the answers.
- Make sure robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot, and that your host or CDN lets OpenAI's IP addresses through.
- Rewrite your homepage and pricing page so the offer, the price and the buyer are in plain sentences.
- Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Do the same in Google Search Console, for Gemini and Google's AI features.
- Publish an llms.txt.
- Run the same questions again in a month and compare.

Questions
Asked about this one
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT's answers?
You can pay for an ad, not for a place in the answer. OpenAI's help page on ads says they appear below a response, labelled as sponsored, run on systems separate from the chat model, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses.
Is this different for Perplexity and Gemini?
The habit is the same: ask the question, see who is named, compare pages. For Gemini in Google Search, Google's guide says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, and a page has to be indexed in Google with a snippet to be shown in them, so ordinary SEO carries over there. The free check asks all three.
Should I block GPTBot?
Decide it on its own. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler and OAI-SearchBot is its search crawler, and OpenAI treats the two settings independently. Blocking GPTBot keeps your pages out of training without taking you out of ChatGPT search; blocking OAI-SearchBot takes you out of the answers.
Does a one-person business have a chance?
On the part that is yours, yes. Stating your services, prices and buyers plainly is fully within one owner's control, and a bigger company's sentence is no easier to quote than yours. Start by comparing your pages with the businesses that do get named.
