InstagramCoreInstagram has a creator marketplace where brands search by keyword and filters and see creator portfolios (Meta 2024), and partnership ads let a brand run your post as an ad under your handle. Insense asks for 1,000+ Instagram followers (Insense 2026). Instagram collaborations averaged $363.64 in January 2025 (Collabstr).
TikTokCoreBrands plan for TikTok more than any other platform: 31% of surveyed marketers included it in 2026 influencer plans, the highest of any platform (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026). A niche-clear TikTok profile works as a public portfolio, and Insense asks for 500+ median views (Insense 2026). TikTok One lets brands and agencies search creators (TikTok, Nov 2025).

Who buys and how they choose

Buyers are e-commerce and app founders, in-house marketers, creative strategists and agencies. They need many short, real-looking videos to run as ads and to post, and they judge a creator by the first seconds of a sample. They are price-aware: UGC averaged $198 asked and $178 paid in January 2025 (Collabstr), and about 80% of UGC creator costs in a 2026 brand survey were under $500 (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026). Sellers are solo creators and micro-influencers, often part-time, plus small creator studios.

Trigger: a product launch, creative that stopped working, or a season. Billo's ad calendar has brands testing new hooks from September to mid-October, then scaling the winners into Black Friday weekend (Billo 2026). On marketplaces, brands usually pick creators 5-10 business days after posting a campaign (Insense 2026). Direct deals follow a sample, a price and a short message or call. The decider is a founder, marketing manager, creative strategist or media buyer. Price pressure is high: UGC rates fell 44% in Collabstr's January 2025 data, while the share of creators on Collabstr offering UGC rose from 26% to 66%. The margin sits in rights: usage rights raised costs by 39.91% (Collabstr Jan 2025), and rights, allowlisting and paid media can double or triple a $200 asset (Billo 2026). Demand is rising: in a 2026 brand survey (600+ respondents overall, small subsamples per question) half of the brands asked about UGC creators planned to use more and none planned to use fewer (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026).

Where buyers find businesses like this

  • Marketplace campaign boards (Billo, Insense and similar) — Billo: 37,000+ brands, hundreds of job offers a day, creators in the US, Canada or UK aged 18+, no following needed, paid twice a month via PayPal (Billo 2026). Insense: 3,500+ vetted brands, 100K+ creators, $8M paid to creators since 2020; creators need a UGC portfolio plus 1,000+ Instagram followers and 500+ median TikTok views (as its FAQ words it) and 1% engagement; apply to about 20 campaigns to get chosen for one (Insense 2026). Billo, a vendor, says most real work comes from applications you submit, not unsolicited DMs (Billo 2026).
  • Instagram creator marketplace — Brands search creators by keyword and audience filters in Meta Business Suite and can message one or several creators; creators join from the Professional Dashboard, list brands and interests, build a portfolio and get requests in a 'Partnership messages' folder (Meta, Feb 2024, updated to Oct 2024). Live in the US, then Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Japan, India, Brazil, and from May 2024 Argentina, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain and Turkey (Meta 2024).
  • TikTok One — TikTok's platform where advertisers and agencies search creators by keyword and filters and reach them by invitation links, direct invitations or open applications; brands can hand the whole process to an agency (TikTok, Nov 2025; the page read looked like the Japan edition, so check local availability and eligibility).
  • Brands and agencies searching TikTok and Instagram themselves — guides say brand and agency staff scroll TikTok and Instagram for creators in their category. No hard data found. TikTok is in 31% of surveyed marketers' 2026 influencer plans, the highest of any platform (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026).
  • Referrals from past clients, creative strategists and agencies — guides say repeat clients and referrals are the cheapest work to win. No published data found.
  • Cold outreach by email, LinkedIn or DM to brands already running ads — guides say it works when targeted and short. No reply-rate data found. Billo says applications beat unsolicited DMs (Billo 2026). Email outreach is covered by CAN-SPAM with no business-to-business exception (FTC).

The first 90 days

  1. Week 1

Pick one niche and one product type you really use (skin care, pets, kitchen, apps).

The FTC says you cannot describe experience with a product you have not tried, so every sample must be real use (FTC 2023).

  2. Week 1-2

Film 3-5 samples of 15-30 seconds, vertical, the hook in the first 2 seconds, burned-in captions, your own voice, no trending song (Billo advises 3-5 samples before applying; Billo 2026). Film three different openers for each script.

  3. Week 2

Build a one-page portfolio (samples, deliverables, turnaround, price-from, booking email).

Set both bios to 'UGC creator for [niche]' with the email, and pin your 3 best samples.

  4. Week 2

    Write your rate card.

Price per video; usage rights as a separate line (30, 60 or 90 days); allowlisting or partnership ads as a separate line; raw footage, rush and extra revisions as add-ons. Never sell perpetual rights as part of the base fee. Use the New York model contract as a checklist: scope, revisions, payment within 30 days, rights transfer on final payment.

  5. Week 2-4

Apply to about 20 campaigns on marketplaces (Insense suggests at least 20 applications to get chosen for one; Billo's Premium tier unlocks after 14 completed videos plus good stats; Insense and Billo 2026). Take the first jobs at marketplace rates, about $50-150 at entry level (Billo 2026), to earn proof.

  6. Week 3-6

Build a list of 50 brands in your niche that are running ads now (the Meta Ad Library and TikTok's Creative Center show who).

Send 10 pitches a week by email or LinkedIn: under about 90 words, the first line is the point, one sample link, one price-from line, one question. Follow up once after about 5 days.

  7. Week 5-8

After each job, ask for three things: permission to show the work, one number (hook rate, click rate, or 'ran as an ad for 30 days') and a one-line testimonial.

  8. Week 8-12

Raise your price after your third repeat client or when you are booked a week ahead.

Sell the three-hook package, a monthly package, and time-boxed partnership-ad authorization as a paid add-on.

  9. Week 10-12

Plan the next quarter's offers around the calendar.

Send Q4 offers in July-August next year; in the quarter you start, offer seasonal packs weeks before the season.

  • Proof: a number a client shared

How people find you here: The creator marketplace (brands search by keyword and filters; join from the Professional Dashboard and build a portfolio; Meta 2024). Put the niche in the name field and bio ('UGC creator, pet brands'). Reels reach non-followers. Partnership-labelled posts with clients show the brand's audience that you exist (guides say).

How a viewer becomes a client: In the app: open the partnership message, check the requirements, rate and the brand's rating, then accept (Meta 2024). Outside it: bio email, one sample link, one price-from line, one question.

Benchmarks: Instagram collaborations averaged $363.64 in January 2025 (Collabstr). Hook rate on Meta video ads: 24.42% average, Health and Beauty 28.34%, Services 19.95% (Billo 2026).

Avoid on Instagram

  • Do not post a branded collaboration without the paid partnership label. The ASA says the platform label may be enough if it is upfront and prominent, and to add 'Ad' if unsure (ASA/CAP, UK).
  • Do not hide 'Ad' under 'see more' or in a pile of hashtags (ASA/CAP; FTC Disclosures 101).
  • Do not give open-ended permission to run your post as an ad for a one-off fee: agree the length, the platform and the fee first.

How a viewer becomes a client: Bio: the niche in one line and an email. Pin your 3 best samples. When a brand replies, send one sample link, one price-from line and one question.

Benchmarks: Hook rate on Meta video ads, H2 2025: 24.42% average, Health and Beauty 28.34%, Services 19.95% (Billo 2026, 80,069 ads). TikTok collaborations averaged $350.06 in January 2025 (Collabstr). TikTok was in 31% of 2026 influencer plans, the highest platform (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026).

Avoid on TikTok

  • Do not use trending songs in a brand's or sponsored video. TikTok has directed business accounts to its Commercial Music Library since 2020, and tracks outside it need their own commercial licence (Social Media Today 2020). Check TikTok's current terms; use library or licensed audio, or none.
  • Do not describe results you did not get. Do not say you use a product daily if you tried it once (FTC Endorsement Guides Q&A, 2023).
  • Do not film a review as a customer who does not exist or has not used the product, including AI-generated people or scripts: the FTC's 2024 rule bans fake testimonials like that.
  • Do not leave a Spark Ad authorization open-ended for a one-off fee. TikTok lets the authorization duration be set; a post cannot be deleted while it is authorized as an ad (TikTok Business Help Center, June 2026).

LinkedIn · support

Founders, marketing managers, creative strategists and agency producers are on LinkedIn, so it is the place for a short, targeted pitch and for case studies. Billo says marketplace applications beat unsolicited DMs (Billo 2026), so treat LinkedIn as the second lane and use it for warm follow-up, agencies and brands you already studied. How a viewer becomes a client: Move to email or a short call after a reply. Send one sample and a rate card, not a deck.

Avoid on LinkedIn

  • Do not paste a long pitch into a connection request.
  • Do not send the same message to a whole team at one brand.
  • Do not move cold outreach to email without CAN-SPAM basics: postal address and an opt-out. B2B email is not exempt (FTC).

Email is how creators pitch brands one to one and keep past clients. Billo says most real work comes from marketplace applications, not unsolicited DMs (Billo 2026), so use email for warm leads: past clients, marketplace replies and brands that reacted to a sample. This is not a public newsletter. No reply-rate data was found.

Support channel. Brands that find you ask for a link. One page with samples, a price-from line, turnaround and a booking email is enough; there is no case for a regular blog. Billo advises 3-5 samples before applying anywhere (Billo 2026). Marketplaces own the generic searches, so a personal site mainly wins narrow niche searches (guides say).

When searches peak: Brands plan Q4 creative from late summer: Billo's calendar has hook testing from September, so refresh the portfolio and send Q4 offers in July-August (inference). January brings new yearly budgets: 87.49% of the marketers who answered expect their influencer budget to rise in 2026 (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026; a small subsample).

Where businesses in this niche get featured and linked

  • Marketplace profiles (Billo, Insense, Collabstr and similar) that link to your portfolio
  • Instagram creator marketplace and TikTok One listings
  • Brands' creator-spotlight or customer-content posts that link to you
  • Agency and studio rosters where you are a white-label partner (guides say)

The year in this niche

WhenWhat matters
January-FebruaryNew yearly budgets. 87.49% of the marketers who answered expect higher influencer budgets in 2026 (Influencer Marketing Hub 2026, a small subsample). Send a new-year pack: three hook variants of one script.
Gift and routine seasons (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, back to school)guides say brands in gifting and routine categories brief creators weeks before the season starts. Pitch early with a seasonal sample.
July-AugustPitch Q4. This is an inference from the ad calendar below: brands start testing hooks in September.
September to mid-OctoberBrands test new hooks while competition is light (Billo 2026). Be ready to deliver three hook variants of a script within days.
Mid-October to 26 NovemberBrands build retargeting from the winning concepts (Billo 2026). Offer variations of what already works, with a distinct first frame: identical discount-led openers hurt hook rate during Black Friday (Billo 2026).
27-30 November (Black Friday to Cyber Monday, 2026)Brands prioritise volume over efficiency (Billo 2026). Keep slots open and turn files around fast. Need-driven categories such as baby and pet supplies do not pull back in October (Billo 2026).
DecemberAds keep running after Cyber Monday (Billo 2026). Gifting categories ramp toward December; plan content for them.

Partners who share your audience

  • Creative strategists and media buyers at brands and agencies. They pick creators for ad accounts and decide which hooks get tested (guides say). Send them hook variants, not one video.
  • Marketplaces: Billo, Insense and others. Billo's own comparison lists pay per video of $50-500+ at Billo, about $92-315 at Influee, $37-115 at Soona and $50-150+ for video at JoinBrands (Billo, Sept 2026, a vendor comparison). Use them for the first 5-14 paid jobs and for proof.
  • Agencies. TikTok One lets brands hand the whole creator process to an agency, with a 'Partner Exchange' to find one (TikTok, Nov 2025). Become a white-label creator for one or two.
  • Platform ad programs. Instagram partnership ads let a brand run your post as an ad under your handle (Meta 2024). TikTok Spark Ads let a brand run your organic post as an ad with your authorization; the post cannot be deleted while authorized, and sparked videos can be up to 10 minutes long (TikTok 2026). Billo partnership ads run from your handle for 30 days (Billo 2026). Sell each as a separate, time-boxed fee.
  • Editors and other creators for volume, once you are booked a week ahead (guides say).
  • Repeat brands on monthly packages (guides say).

Rules that apply

  • US (FTC Endorsement Guides, revised 2023; Disclosures 101, 2019): disclose any material connection, including free products and commissions. The disclosure must sit with the endorsement, in the video itself for video; a description or profile page is not enough, platform tools do not replace your own words, and 'sp', 'collab' or 'ambassador' alone are unclear. You cannot describe your experience with a product you have not tried, and if you tried it once you cannot suggest regular use. The FTC usually goes after advertisers and agencies, but action against an individual endorser can be appropriate. (FTC Endorsement Guides Q&A; FTC Disclosures 101)
  • US (FTC rule on reviews and testimonials, Aug 2024): bans reviews and testimonials by someone who does not exist, such as AI-generated ones, or who had no real experience with the product; bans paying for reviews of a set sentiment; bans buying fake followers or views. Do not film 'customer' ads as a made-up customer. (FTC press release, Aug 2024)
  • US (CAN-SPAM, FTC): commercial email needs a valid postal address, no misleading headers or subject lines, a working opt-out honoured within 10 business days; no business-to-business exception; up to $53,088 per email. (FTC CAN-SPAM guide, updated Jan 2024)
  • New York State (Freelance Isn't Free Act, General Business Law Article 44-A, added 28 Aug 2024): a written contract for work worth $800 or more (alone or combined with the same client over the previous 120 days); pay on the agreed date or no later than 30 calendar days after the work is done; retaliation is barred. The state Department of Labor's model contract covers revisions, termination and transfer of rights on final payment. (NY DOL model Freelance Worker Agreement, citing GBL 1410)
  • UK (ASA/CAP Code; CMA enforces consumer law): an influencer post is an ad if there is payment or another incentive, including gifts and affiliate links, with the label 'Ad' (or Advert, Advertising, Advertisement Feature) upfront and prominent; 'Sponsored', 'Gifted', 'Supported by', 'collab', 'aff' and '#BrandAmbassador' are unlikely to be clear enough; not hidden under 'see more' or among hashtags; in video, say it at the start. Brands and influencers are both responsible. (ASA/CAP, Recognising ads: social media and influencer marketing)
  • UK (CMA, DMCC Act): the CMA can fine directly for consumer-law breaches since 6 April 2025, up to 10% of global turnover (law-firm summaries; the CMA page itself was not read, so check before quoting).
  • EU (Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and national laws): brand partnerships, affiliate links and content made in exchange for products must be disclosed when the influencer is a trader. The consumer authorities' network adopted '5 Key Principles on Social Media Marketing Disclosures'. National rules and fines differ: France found 6 in 10 of 60 influencers it checked non-compliant (DGCCRF 2023); Spain's checks found on average 77.75% of content did not meet disclosure duties (preliminary, from July 2023). (European Commission Influencer Legal Hub)
  • Music and ad authorization (platform rules): TikTok directed business accounts to its Commercial Music Library in 2020; tracks outside it need their own commercial licence (Social Media Today 2020). A Spark Ad needs the creator's authorization (TikTok Business Help Center 2026).

What to measure

  • Pitches sent, replies and booked jobs per week (no verified benchmark; track your own ratio). Insense suggests about 20 marketplace applications to get chosen for one (Insense 2026).
  • Average price asked versus paid. UGC averaged $198.06 asked and $177.68 paid in January 2025, about 10% under asking (Collabstr). If you are paid far under your ask, your ask is too high for your proof.
  • Share of revenue from rights add-ons. Usage rights raised costs by 39.91% (Collabstr Jan 2025); rights and paid media can double or triple a $200 asset (Billo 2026).
  • Time from brief to delivery and revisions per job (no verified benchmark). Insense brands usually pick within 5-10 business days (Insense 2026).
  • Hook rate of ads that use your videos, when a client shares it. Benchmark: 24.42% average on Meta video ads in H2 2025, Health and Beauty 28.34%, Services 19.95% (Billo 2026, 80,069 ads).
  • Repeat-client rate and referrals (no verified benchmark).
  • Profile engagement of at least 1% if you apply to Insense, which also lists 1,000+ Instagram followers and 500+ median TikTok views (Insense 2026). Billo and others list no follower minimum (Billo 2026).
