How to market your music in 2026
Independent musicians and producers grow through Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and an email newsletter. This blueprint sets out what to post and how often, the season, the rules on claims and reviews, and the first 90 days, from 30 sources checked in October 2026.
Core channels:InstagramTikTokYouTubeEmail newsletter
Where to show up
Core channels get most of the hours. Support channels get a little. The rest can wait until the core ones work.
| Channel | Role | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Reels reach strangers and Stories keep fans warm. Instagram's head names watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach as the signals to watch, with sends mattering slightly more for reaching people who do not follow you (Mosseri, Jan 2025). The target is a clip a fan sends to a friend. | |
| TikTok | Core | TikTok is where new music is found: US TikTok users are 74% more likely to discover and share new music than the average short-form user, and 84% of songs entering the Billboard Global 200 in 2024 went viral there first (TikTok/Luminate, Feb 2025; TikTok-commissioned). |
| YouTube | Core | YouTube is search, and it is the shop window for beats, lessons and live sessions. Guides say it is the strongest discovery channel for beat producers (RouteNote and Loop guides). A band that wants ticketing, merch and artist analytics needs an Official Artist Channel (YouTube Help, 2026). |
| Email newsletter | Core | The only audience the artist owns. Spotify pays nothing below 1,000 streams in 12 months, and social reach is rented; a list reaches fans on release, ticket and merch days. Guides say email is the best-performing direct channel for musicians but give no measured numbers (Hypebot, 2025). |
| Support | For local gigs only: Facebook Events and local community groups are where nights out get planned (guides say). We found no 2025-26 music-specific data, so keep the effort small. | |
| Support | Mostly peers, not buyers: feedback communities help artists improve and meet collaborators, and strict rules remove one-off links. r/listentothis is the exception where small artists reach listeners (about 17.9M members; artists under 500,000 plays; strict title format; Orphiq 2026). | |
| Google Business Profile | Support | Only for lesson businesses. Google lets a business have a profile if it has a location customers visit or it travels to customers; service-area businesses must hide the home address (Google Business Profile guidelines). The guidelines do not mention performers or bands, so bands skip this. |
| Skip | No 2025-26 source we found links Pinterest to music discovery, beat sales or lesson bookings. The hour is better spent on short video and email. | |
| X | Skip | None of the music-discovery sources we found (TikTok/Luminate 2025, Mosseri 2025, YouTube, Bandcamp) put X in the discovery path. Keep the handle claimed and cross-post only if it costs nothing. |
| Skip | No evidence that fans, gig-goers, beat buyers or lesson students find musicians here. A producer selling to brands or agencies is a different business that this preset does not cover. | |
| Threads | Skip | No music-discovery data found for Threads. Cross-post short Instagram text posts only if it is automatic. |
| Quora | Skip | No sign that people ask Quora for music or lessons in a way that converts. |
Who buys and how they choose
Listeners who meet a new artist in a short video or a friend's message and then save or follow; local fans who come to gigs and buy merch; artists and creators who license beats; parents and adults who book lessons. Attention is the scarce thing: about 106,000 new tracks reached streaming services every day in 2025, and 88% of tracks had 1,000 or fewer streams that year (Luminate 2025 Year-End Music Report). A track earns no Spotify royalties until it passes 1,000 streams in 12 months and has enough unique listeners (Spotify support, 2026), so a small act's reliable money is direct: tickets, merch, Bandcamp, beat licences, lessons.
Fans: nothing is bought at first. A listen becomes a save or follow, then an email sign-up, then a ticket or an album later. Sends to friends help a clip reach new people (Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Jan 2025). A gig ticket is bought once the date is known and a friend agrees to come. Beat buyers (rappers, singers, YouTubers) search by style and mood, compare licence tiers in one sitting, and one person decides; price sensitivity is high, so cheap leases carry volume and exclusives carry margin (guides say). Lesson buyers (parents, adult beginners) search locally, book a trial first and decide on trust: reviews, the teacher's face, a clear price.
Where buyers find businesses like this
- TikTok For You feed and search — TikTok/Luminate Music Impact Report (Feb 2025, 2024 data, commissioned by TikTok): US TikTok users are 74% more likely than the average short-form video user to discover and share new music; 84% of songs that entered the Billboard Global 200 in 2024 went viral on TikTok first.
- Instagram Reels, spread by sends to friends — Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, Jan 2025: watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach are the signals to watch; likes count slightly more for followers, sends slightly more for people who do not follow you (reported by Social Media Today).
- Spotify: Release Radar, editor pitch, algorithmic playlists — Spotify asks for a pitch at least 7 days before release; pitching also puts the song in followers' Release Radar; placement is never guaranteed (Spotify for Artists, 2026).
- YouTube search (type beats, lessons, live sessions) — Guides say YouTube is the strongest discovery channel for beat producers, through style and mood searches (RouteNote and Loop beat-selling guides). An Official Artist Channel adds ticketing, merch and artist analytics (YouTube Help, 2026).
- Reddit listener communities — r/listentothis (about 17.9M members) takes small artists under 500,000 plays in a strict title format; a guide says a good post can bring 10,000+ plays (Orphiq 2026).
- Bandcamp and Bandcamp Fridays — Bandcamp Fridays have put more than $150 million in artists' hands over five years, and the December 2025 one passed $3.8 million (Hypebot coverage, 2025-26). Bandcamp bans music made wholly or largely by AI (Jan 2026), which positions it as the human-made shop.
- Local scene: venue calendars, local blogs, college and community radio, other bands' audiences — Guides say this is where first local fans come from; no survey number found.
- Other artists' and creators' audiences (collab posts, duets, stitches, features) — Guides say; Instagram Collab posts show on each co-author's profile. No measured effect found.
The first 90 days
Week 1
Write the one offer for your kind of act in one sentence: next single and next gig (band or solo), the beat store and ten best beats (producer), the trial lesson (teacher).
Week 1
Claim the homes: Spotify for Artists, Apple Music for Artists, Bandcamp, YouTube Official Artist Channel (ask your distributor; you need a distributor release and a channel focused on your music), Google Business Profile for lessons.
Week 1
Build one link page: email sign-up first (free demo, stems, beat pack or practice checklist), then streaming and the store, then the next show.
Put a QR code on posters, stickers and the merch table.
Week 2
Batch-film once for about three hours: six hook clips, three making-of clips, three story clips, three live-room clips, all with lyrics on screen.
Schedule four posts a week.
Weeks 2-3
Deliver the single to the distributor early.
Pitch it in Spotify for Artists at least 7 days before release (that also puts it in followers' Release Radar). Open a pre-save, and a Countdown Page if your account offers one.
Week 3
Send the release to ten local blogs, college or community radio shows and free-submission curators, with a three-line pitch and one link.
Never pay for placement.
Week 4
Release on a Friday.
Email the list first, then Stories, Reels and TikTok. Answer every comment and DM for 48 hours.
Weeks 5-6
Book three local gigs.
Create the Facebook event with the venue as co-host, post an Instagram Collab with the venue, and take a QR sign-up sheet to the merch table.
Weeks 5-8
Beatmakers upload 2-3 beats a week with search-shaped titles and the licence table in the description.
Teachers publish the lesson page, collect the first five reviews and post one how-to a week.
Week 8
Review. Which three clips had the most sends, saves and watch time? Make three more like them and drop the format that did nothing. Check Spotify for Artists for saves and where listeners came from, and the email list growth.
Weeks 9-12
Second release or a single with a different hook.
If you sell direct, time it near a Bandcamp Friday (6 Nov or 4 Dec 2026). Consider one small Spotify Marquee test only after the song earns saves (it is paid; Spotify says viewers are over 3.7x more likely to stream, on average).
Week 12
Decide whether to test Discovery Mode on one track: no upfront cost, Spotify takes a commission on streams in Discovery Mode contexts, nothing is guaranteed. Skip it if you earn from those streams today.

Instagram · core
Reels reach strangers and Stories keep fans warm. Instagram's head names watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach as the signals to watch, with sends mattering slightly more for reaching people who do not follow you (Mosseri, Jan 2025). The target is a clip a fan sends to a friend.
Rhythm: 3 Reels a week cut from one batch-filming session; Stories on gig and release days; in the two weeks around a release, a Story teaser daily and 4 Reels.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Hook-first song clip | about 35% | 0-1 s: the most singable line or riff already playing, lyric on screen. 1-12 s: verse into chorus, or the drop. Last 2 s: text cue ('send this to the friend who needs the chorus') and the release date. Caption: one line on what the song is about; link in bio points to the pre-save or stream. — A clip people send is the signal Instagram says helps reach beyond followers (Mosseri, Jan 2025). |
| Making-of in 20 seconds | about 25% | Show the raw idea (voice memo, one loop) first. Add one layer every few seconds. Cut to the finished hook. On-screen text names the chord progression, sample or plug-in used. — Shows craft; beatmakers and teachers use it as proof of skill (guides say). |
| Collab post with a co-author | about 15% | Post as an Instagram Collab with the venue, the other band, the producer or the video maker so it lands on both followings. First frame is the shared moment, not a logo. — One post reaches two or three audiences (guides say). |
| Live-room moment | about 15% | Vertical clip of the best 10 seconds of the set, ideally the crowd singing back, filmed by someone else. Tag the venue and city. Caption ends with the next date and ticket link. — Proof that people turn up, which turns followers into ticket buyers (guides say). |
| Stories: countdown, poll, DM prompt | about 10% | Release countdown with the pre-save sticker; a two-option poll ('which chorus?'); a 'tell me your city' prompt that you answer in DMs. — Keeps existing fans close and starts DM conversations (guides say). |
What to post about
- The story behind one song in one scene
- Craft: how a part was made
- Gig and tour life in your local scene
- Fans' reactions, covers and videos of your song
- Release countdowns and ticket or merch drops
Openings that work
- Story: 'I wrote this the week our drummer left' (chorus line already on screen)
- Send prompt: 'Send this to the person who needs the chorus'
- Craft reveal: 'This whole drop is one vocal sample'
- Local proof: 'Forty people in [city] knew every word'
How people find you here: Reels recommendations to non-followers; Collab posts on co-authors' profiles; location tags on gig clips; song, genre and city words in captions and on-screen text (guides say).
How a viewer becomes a client: One link in bio: email sign-up first (free demo, stems or beat pack for the list), then streaming and Bandcamp, then the next show. Answer every DM and ask for the city so the list can be split by place.
Avoid on Instagram
- Do not buy followers, views or streams. The FTC's August 2024 rule bans buying or selling bot followers and views for commercial use, and Spotify can withhold royalties for artificial streams.
- Do not make every post a 'stream now' ad; watch time and sends are what Instagram says to watch.
- Do not assume a song you do not own is cleared for a post that sells tickets, merch or lessons.
TikTok · core
TikTok is where new music is found: US TikTok users are 74% more likely to discover and share new music than the average short-form user, and 84% of songs entering the Billboard Global 200 in 2024 went viral there first (TikTok/Luminate, Feb 2025; TikTok-commissioned).
Rhythm: 4-5 posts a week for the four weeks around a release, 2-3 a week between releases; film 8-10 clips in one sitting.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| 15-second hook | about 35% | Second 0: the hook line sung or played, lyric big on screen. Seconds 1-15: the best chorus or drop, ending on the line that loops back to the start. Use your own released track as the sound so every reuse points to the song. Caption: a question ('which line hits harder?'). — TikTok views are significantly related to streaming volumes for 96% of the artists analysed (TikTok/Luminate, Feb 2025; correlation, TikTok-commissioned). |
| Song build in parts | about 20% | Part 1: the first 20 seconds of the idea. Part 2: add the next section a day later. Part 3: the finished hook. Each part ends on an unresolved line and says 'part 2 tomorrow'. — A series gives viewers a reason to follow (guides say). |
| Stitch or duet with a fan | about 15% | Ask by DM first. Show 3 seconds of a fan's cover or reaction, then answer with your own take or the next line. Credit them in the caption. — Turns listeners into co-authors who share it (guides say). |
| Beat in 30 seconds (producers) | about 15% (producers only) | Sample or loop, then drums, then bass, then the drop. Finish with the style tag and where to get the full beat. — Producers sell skill and taste; buyers see both (guides say). |
| Face-to-camera story | about 15% | One person, one thought: 'the line I almost cut'. Cut every pause. End with the line in the song. — Gives the music a person to follow (guides say). |
What to post about
- Song stories and what the lyric means
- Process, gear and DAW tips
- Gig and scene life
- Release-week countdowns
- Fan covers and reactions
Openings that work
- Lyric-first: the hook line on screen at second 0
- Finish-the-line challenge: 'Finish this lyric'
- Contrarian craft tip: 'Stop adding a fourth chord'
- Unfinished business: 'Part 1 of the song I cannot finish'
How people find you here: TikTok search (genre, mood and 'type' words in caption and on-screen text), your sound's page, 'Add to Music App' saves (over one billion since 2024, TikTok/Luminate Feb 2025), duets and stitches.
How a viewer becomes a client: Profile link to the one page (email first, then streaming); pinned comment with the exact words to search on Spotify; for beatmakers, the store link in the pinned comment; for gigs, the city in the caption and the ticket link in bio.
Benchmarks: TikTok-correlated artists averaged 11% week-over-week streaming growth in 2024 against 3% for other artists; US TikTok music listeners are 68% more likely to pay for streaming (TikTok/Luminate, Feb 2025; correlation, TikTok-commissioned).
Avoid on TikTok
- Do not switch the artist account to a Business account without knowing the music rule: a Business account sees only the Commercial Music Library in the app, and TikTok says the general library is not cleared for brand or business content (TikTok for Business help, 2026).
- Do not use someone else's trending sound in a post that sells tickets, merch or lessons.
- Do not buy streams or followers (Spotify terms; FTC Aug 2024 rule).
- Do not post AI vocals that imitate a real artist; Spotify allows vocal impersonation only with the artist's authorisation (Sept 2025).
YouTube · core
YouTube is search, and it is the shop window for beats, lessons and live sessions. Guides say it is the strongest discovery channel for beat producers (RouteNote and Loop guides). A band that wants ticketing, merch and artist analytics needs an Official Artist Channel (YouTube Help, 2026).
Rhythm: Beatmakers: 2-3 beats a week (guides say). Bands and solo artists: one long video every two weeks and 3 Shorts a week cut from it. Teachers: one how-to a week.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Type-beat upload (beatmakers) | beatmakers: about 60% of uploads | Title: [FREE] [artist-style] Type Beat - 'Name' | genre, mood, BPM. First 30 seconds: the hook of the beat over a simple visualiser, no long intro. Description: BPM and key, licence tiers with prices, store link first. Pinned comment: the cheapest tier and how to buy. One thumbnail style; mood playlists. — Buyers search by style, mood and BPM and compare in one sitting (guides say). |
| Live session or one-take video | bands and solo artists: about 40% | One continuous take in a room with character. The chorus or riff starts inside 10 seconds. Title: song, artist, city. End screen: pre-save or stream link and the newsletter form. — Gives search traffic a face and proves the act can play (guides say). |
| Short cut from the best 20 seconds | about 25% of uploads | Vertical, hook on screen from frame one, loop-able end, song name in the caption; the full video pinned in the comments. — Shorts bring new viewers and the long video holds them (guides say). |
| How-to answer (teachers and producers) | teachers: about 70%; producers: about 15% | One search question per video, such as how to mix 808s or how to play a song's intro. Show the result in the first 10 seconds, then steps with chapters, then a link to a trial lesson or a sample pack. — People type the question; the video answers it and sells the teacher (guides say). |
What to post about
- Live sessions
- Beats by mood and genre
- How-to answers
- Behind the scenes of a release
- Licensed covers and fan requests
Openings that work
- Result first: play the finished riff, then 'here is how'
- Search-shaped title: 'sad trap type beat 140 BPM'
- Question title for lessons: 'Why does your barre chord buzz?'
How people find you here: YouTube search and Suggested: title, thumbnail and the first 30 seconds decide the click. An Official Artist Channel merges your Topic channel, Vevo channel and existing channel into one (YouTube Help). Mood playlists for beats; end screens to the next video.
How a viewer becomes a client: Beats: store link at the top of the description and the cheapest licence in the pinned comment. Lessons: trial-lesson booking link. Bands: ticket and merch shelves on the Official Artist Channel, pre-save link and newsletter form in the pinned comment.
Avoid on YouTube
- Do not register a non-exclusive beat in Content ID; a standard lease normally does not include Content ID, and a claim can hit your buyers' videos (guides say, Fox i Music 2026).
- Do not name another artist in a beat title in a way that suggests they made or endorse it; type-beat naming is common but a grey area (guides say).
- Do not upload a cover without a licence plan (Content ID will claim it; distributing it in the US needs a mechanical licence).
- Do not apply for an Official Artist Channel without a distributor release and a channel that is focused on your music (YouTube Help).
Email newsletter · core
The only audience the artist owns. Spotify pays nothing below 1,000 streams in 12 months, and social reach is rented; a list reaches fans on release, ticket and merch days. Guides say email is the best-performing direct channel for musicians but give no measured numbers (Hypebot, 2025).
Rhythm: One email every two weeks, plus a release-day email, a ticket-on-sale email, and an email for each Bandcamp Friday you join.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Behind-the-song letter | about 40% | 200-300 words, first person. The story behind one lyric or sound. One audio snippet or private link as a reward. Ends with a question the reader can answer by replying. — Replies build a relationship; it is the thing social posts cannot give (guides say). |
| Release-day email | about 20% | Subject is the one fact ('New single Friday, list gets the demo'). One cover image, one big button to the best link (Bandcamp if you sell, streaming if you want saves), one line on why this song, a P.S. with the next show. — The first-day streams and sales count most for the algorithm and the charts (guides say). |
| Show announcement for local fans | about 20% | City in the subject. Date, venue, doors, ticket link, a bring-a-friend line. Segment by city when the tool allows. — Local fans are the ones who can buy a ticket. |
| Bandcamp Friday or merch drop | about 20% | Day-before reminder and a day-of email. Name the new item, the price and the limit. Bandcamp waives its revenue share on those days (Bandcamp Fridays 2026). — Sales concentrate on those days. |
What to post about
- Story behind each song
- First access: pre-save, demo, presale
- Local shows
- Merch and vinyl drops
- Thanks and fan spotlights
Openings that work
- Fact plus perk: 'Friday: the new single (list gets the demo first)'
- City: 'Berlin: new date added'
- Personal: 'I almost did not release this'
How people find you here: Not a discovery channel; lists grow from the link-in-bio page, a free demo or beat pack for the list, a QR code on posters and the merch table, and Bandcamp buyers who opt in.
How a viewer becomes a client: One primary button per email: ticket, merch, Bandcamp album, beat licence or lesson trial.
Benchmarks: Bandsintown says that on average 45% of the followers an artist targets, or 70% of an event's RSVPs, can be reached directly by email or push (Bandsintown help page, about 2022; varies by artist). No 2025 open-rate benchmark for musicians found.
Avoid on Email newsletter
- Do not add fans without consent or buy lists. In the US, CAN-SPAM needs accurate sender details, no deceptive subject lines, a postal address and an opt-out honoured within 10 business days, with penalties up to $53,088 per email (FTC).
- Do not send five links; one button wins.
- Do not hide the unsubscribe link.
Facebook · support
For local gigs only: Facebook Events and local community groups are where nights out get planned (guides say). We found no 2025-26 music-specific data, so keep the effort small.
Rhythm: One event page per gig, created 3-4 weeks ahead, plus a reminder post the week of the show.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Event page per gig | about 50% | Title: act name, venue, city, date. First lines: doors, set time, ticket link, one clip from the last show. Ask the venue to co-host so the event shows to its following. — An event can be shared by the venue and by friends (guides say). |
| Cross-post in local music and venue groups | about 30% | Read the group rules first. Post the clip and the date, not a sales line; answer comments for an hour. — Reaches people who go out in your town (guides say). |
| Release announcement | about 20% | Video of the hook, one line on the song, the single streaming link. — Older local fans who are not on TikTok will see it (guides say). |
What to post about
- Show dates and venues
- Local scene news
- Release news
Openings that work
- City-first: 'Leeds: we play The Wardrobe on 14 March'
- Bring-a-friend: 'Tag the person you are bringing'
How people find you here: Venue and promoter co-hosted events, local groups, friends' shares.
How a viewer becomes a client: Ticket link in the event; list sign-up sheet or QR code at the merch table.
Avoid on Facebook
- Do not post a link and leave: local groups remove self-promotion without conversation.
- Do not create a second page for the same show; use one event and co-hosts.
Reddit · support
Mostly peers, not buyers: feedback communities help artists improve and meet collaborators, and strict rules remove one-off links. r/listentothis is the exception where small artists reach listeners (about 17.9M members; artists under 500,000 plays; strict title format; Orphiq 2026).
Rhythm: Give real feedback weekly. Post your own track once a quarter at most, in the feedback thread only; a 2026 guide says to save Reddit for your strongest work, two to four times a year.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Give-first feedback comment | about 70% | Reply to someone else's track with three specific points: mix, arrangement, hook. Name a time stamp. Do this before you post your own; r/makinghiphop enforces it. — Earns the right to ask and builds a name among peers. |
| Feedback-thread post | about 20% | One track, one specific question ('is the second verse too busy?'), the link format the thread allows, nothing else. — It is the one place WeAreTheMusicMakers allows self-promotion (Orphiq 2026). |
| Lesson post | about 10% | Text post about a production problem you solved, with the steps and one before-and-after clip where the sub allows files or links. — Teaching posts earn upvotes without selling (guides say). |
What to post about
- Production questions
- Feedback swaps
- Gear and DAW tips
- Release announcements only where allowed
Openings that work
- Plain and specific: 'Finished this after two years; the bridge feels thin, thoughts?' (a 2026 guide prefers this to 'MUST LISTEN NEW BANGER')
How people find you here: Each sub's feedback thread; r/listentothis for listeners; local city subs usually allow local artists (Orphiq 2026).
How a viewer becomes a client: One link in your profile, not in the post unless the thread asks. Reply to every comment; invite replies, not clicks.
Benchmarks: A guide says a good r/listentothis post can bring 10,000+ plays (Orphiq 2026); treat it as a best case.
Avoid on Reddit
- Do not ask for upvotes or boost a post artificially (Reddit rules, repeated by Ditto Music's Jan 2026 guide).
- In r/makinghiphop, do not post in the Daily Feedback Thread without giving feedback: a bot checks and missing it leads to a ban (copy of the official thread, 2024).
- Do not post the same track in several subs on the same day.
- Do not use a business-style account with no history; r/listentothis wants karma and post history (Orphiq 2026).
Google Business Profile · support
Only for lesson businesses. Google lets a business have a profile if it has a location customers visit or it travels to customers; service-area businesses must hide the home address (Google Business Profile guidelines). The guidelines do not mention performers or bands, so bands skip this.
Rhythm: Update monthly: photos, hours, trial-lesson offer. Reply to every review within a few days (guides say).
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Profile offer post | about 40% | Photo of the teaching room or the teacher with an instrument; one line: 'Beginner guitar lessons in [area]: first lesson half price this month'; booking button. — Maps searchers compare quickly and pick the clearest offer (guides say). |
| Photo update | about 30% | Real photos: room, instruments, recital with written parent consent. — Trust is the main purchase driver for lessons (guides say). |
| Review reply | about 30% | Thank by first name, mention the instrument and one detail of progress; no private data. — Shows new parents the teacher is active (guides say). |
What to post about
- Instruments and levels taught
- Trial lesson offer
- Student progress (with consent)
- Teacher credentials
Openings that work
- 'Beginner piano lessons for adults in [neighbourhood]'
How people find you here: Google Maps and the local pack for 'guitar lessons near me'; categories, reviews, photos.
How a viewer becomes a client: Call, message or booking button; a trial lesson price that is easy to say yes to.
Avoid on Google Business Profile
- Do not show a home address for a service-area business; hide it (Google guidelines).
- Do not buy or fake reviews; the FTC's Aug 2024 rule bans it.
- Do not add keywords to the business name; use the real name (guides say).
Channels to leave for later
- Pinterest — No 2025-26 source we found links Pinterest to music discovery, beat sales or lesson bookings. The hour is better spent on short video and email.
- X — None of the music-discovery sources we found (TikTok/Luminate 2025, Mosseri 2025, YouTube, Bandcamp) put X in the discovery path. Keep the handle claimed and cross-post only if it costs nothing.
- LinkedIn — No evidence that fans, gig-goers, beat buyers or lesson students find musicians here. A producer selling to brands or agencies is a different business that this preset does not cover.
- Threads — No music-discovery data found for Threads. Cross-post short Instagram text posts only if it is automatic.
- Quora — No sign that people ask Quora for music or lessons in a way that converts.
Google and the blog
Support channel. A small site is the home for the email form, store links, press kit and dates. Articles pay only for two kinds of act: teachers (people search for lessons near them) and producers or educators (people search how-to questions). Bands should keep the site to release, show and press pages.
| Article | Searches like | How the winners are built |
|---|---|---|
| Local lesson pages | “guitar lessons near me”, “piano lessons for adults [city]”, “online drum lessons for beginners”, “music lessons for kids [city]” | One page per instrument, level and area: who it is for, price and trial offer in the first screen, teacher bio and credentials, three student FAQs, map, reviews, booking button. |
| Beat licence explainer and store page | “beat lease vs exclusive rights”, “how much does a beat cost”, “what does a non-exclusive beat licence allow”, “can I monetize a song with a leased beat” | A plain-English table of tiers (MP3 lease, WAV, stems, exclusive) showing what each allows: streams, videos, Content ID, live performance. Steps to buy, FAQ, links to the store. |
| How-to for musicians | “how to pitch a song to Spotify editors”, “how to release a cover song on Spotify”, “do I need a licence to release a cover”, “how to get your first 1,000 streams” | Answer in the first 100 words, numbered steps with screenshots, links to the official pages (Spotify for Artists), a last-updated date, and the author's own result. |
| Release and show pages | “[artist] tour dates”, “[artist] [song] lyrics meaning”, “[band] [city] tickets”, “[artist] merch” | One page per release: story, credits, video embed, streaming links, pre-save. A tour page with dated rows and ticket links. Event structured data on the dates. |
| Press kit (EPK) | “band press kit example”, “what to put in an EPK”, “how to write a band bio” | One page for bookers and press: 100-word bio, three photos, three best links, one live video, stage needs, quotes, contact. |
When searches peak: Lessons: update pages in August for September starts and in December for January starts (guides say). Releases: plan 3-4 weeks of runway so pre-save, press and the editor pitch land together; Spotify's own minimum is a pitch 7 days before release.
Local search: For lesson businesses: claim the Google Business Profile (eligible if a location is visited or the teacher travels; service-area businesses hide the home address), ask every parent or student for a review after the trial lesson without paying for it (FTC Aug 2024 rule), keep name, address and phone identical everywhere. For bands: local press and venue pages, not a business profile.

Read the rules and the top threads before you post. Most of these remove promotion; a useful answer is what earns a visit.
| Subreddit | Who is there | What works and what is allowed |
|---|---|---|
| r/WeAreTheMusicMakers · about 2-4M (trackers disagree: 3.8M on GummySearch, about 1.8M in a 2026 guide) | peers | Production questions, process write-ups, specific feedback requests in the feedback thread. Promotion: A 2026 guide says self-promotion is limited to the weekly feedback thread; the sub has a weekly feedback thread (GummySearch). Read the sidebar before posting. |
| r/makinghiphop · about 340k | peers | Specific mixing or flow questions; useful feedback comments; the Flip This challenge and cypher threads. Promotion: Daily Feedback Thread: one track per person, you must give substantive feedback to others before the next thread or face a ban (bot-checked), no tracks older than a couple of weeks, sincere requests only (copy of the official post, 2024). |
| r/listentothis · about 17.9M | buyers | New releases from small artists; a guide says a good post can bring 10,000+ plays. Promotion: A 2026 guide says artists must have under 500,000 plays across platforms, use the exact title template, link a video or streaming page (not SoundCloud), and have karma and post history. |
| r/IndieMusicFeedback · size not verified | peers | Genuine reactions to a specific question. Promotion: A 2026 guide says you must give feedback to post. |
| r/PromoteYourMusic · about 51k | peers | First listens and swaps; mostly other artists, so not a buyer audience. Promotion: Built for self-promotion; moderators may boost tracks they like (Ditto Music guide, Jan 2026). |

Partners who share your audience
- Other acts on the same bill: swap sets and co-post as Instagram Collab co-authors so each gets the other's followers (guides say).
- Venues and promoters: ask the venue to co-host the Facebook event and to Collab the Reel; give them the clip rights in return.
- Videographers and photographers for live sessions: trade for credit and a share of the clip rights.
- Playlist curators: free submissions only, or a fee for a review but never for placement; Spotify says services that guarantee playlist placement for money break its terms.
- Local blogs, college and community radio, podcasts: a three-line pitch with one link and one live video.
- Producers and artists: write a split sheet before you release a beat or a collaboration; clear samples for both the recording and the composition (guides say).
- Instrument shops and schools (teachers): referral cards and trial-lesson vouchers.
- Distributor: it must support Official Artist Channel requests and Spotify's Discovery Mode if you want either.
Rules that apply
- US, FTC rule on fake reviews and social indicators (final rule Aug 2024): do not buy bot followers or views or reviews for commercial use; civil penalties for knowing violators (FTC press release).
- US, FTC Disclosures 101 (Nov 2019): disclose free gear, payments or perks when you promote a product, in the video itself and not only the description; '#ad' is fine.
- Spotify (global): services that advertise streams for payment or guarantee playlist placement for money violate its terms and can get music removed; Spotify withholds royalties and charges labels and distributors per track for flagrant artificial streaming (Spotify for Artists, 2026).
- Spotify (global): a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months and a minimum number of unique listeners to earn recorded-music royalties (Spotify support, 2026).
- AI music: Spotify allows vocal impersonation only when the impersonated artist authorises it, filters spam uploads, and shows AI credits supplied through DDEX in Song Credits (Spotify, Sept 2025, beta updated 2026). Bandcamp bans music made wholly or in substantial part by AI and any AI impersonation of artists (13 Jan 2026). Deezer has labelled AI-generated music since 2025, AI tracks were over half of its daily uploads by mid-2026 (about 90,000 a day in June), and on 21 Jul 2026 it announced it will remove AI tracks that have not been streamed for six months or that are involved in fraudulent streams (TechCrunch, Jul 2026).
- TikTok (global): a Business account sees only the Commercial Music Library in the app; the general library is not cleared for brand or business content, and the business answers for claims (TikTok for Business help, 2026).
- US covers: distributing a cover needs a mechanical licence for the song; a cover licence does not cover the original recording; DistroKid sells one for about $12 per track per year (guides say). Samples need clearance of both the recording and the composition (guides say).
- YouTube Content ID: a standard non-exclusive beat lease normally does not include Content ID registration, and registering a non-exclusive beat can claim buyers' videos (Fox i Music guide, 2026).
- US email: CAN-SPAM requires accurate sender information, honest subject lines, an ad disclosure, a postal address and an opt-out honoured within 10 business days; up to $53,088 per email (FTC).
- UK and EU: marketing email to individuals generally needs prior consent under GDPR and PECR; not verified in this research, check the ICO or your national regulator.
- Google Business Profile: service-area businesses must hide the home address (Google guidelines). Get written parent permission before posting a student under 18 (good practice; local law varies, not verified here).
What to measure
- Email sign-ups per 100 profile visits and total list size (no public benchmark found).
- Sends per reach and average watch time on Reels, the signals Instagram says to watch (Mosseri, Jan 2025).
- Save rate and listeners-to-followers on Spotify for Artists, for each release (no public benchmark found).
- Streams per track against the 1,000-in-12-months royalty line (Spotify support).
- TikTok profile visits to follows, and 'Add to Music App' saves.
- Direct revenue per 100 fans: Bandcamp sales, merch, tickets.
- Beatmakers: plays to store visits to sales; YouTube click-through and returning viewers.
- Teachers: trial-lesson bookings from Maps and the lesson page, and review count.
- No source gave healthy ranges for any of these in music; track your own trend release over release.

Questions
Asked about independent musicians and producers
What is the best marketing channel for independent musicians and producers?
Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Email newsletter.
How often should independent musicians and producers post on Instagram?
3 Reels a week cut from one batch-filming session; Stories on gig and release days; in the two weeks around a release, a Story teaser daily and 4 Reels.
Is X worth it for independent musicians and producers?
Usually not at the start: None of the music-discovery sources we found (TikTok/Luminate 2025, Mosseri 2025, YouTube, Bandcamp) put X in the discovery path. Keep the handle claimed and cross-post only if it costs nothing.
Which months matter most for independent musicians and producers?
January-February: New-year lesson sign-ups (guides say). Bandcamp Friday on 6 Feb 2026. March-May: Bandcamp Fridays on 6 Mar and 1 May 2026. Record Store Day in April matters for acts selling vinyl through shops (guides say). Spring is a common release window before the festival season (guides say).
What advertising rules apply to independent musicians and producers?
US, FTC rule on fake reviews and social indicators (final rule Aug 2024): do not buy bot followers or views or reviews for commercial use; civil penalties for knowing violators (FTC press release). Rules differ by country: check the regulator's own page for where you sell.
What should independent musicians and producers measure?
Email sign-ups per 100 profile visits and total list size (no public benchmark found). Sends per reach and average watch time on Reels, the signals Instagram says to watch (Mosseri, Jan 2025). Save rate and listeners-to-followers on Spotify for Artists, for each release (no public benchmark found).
