How to market a mobile app in 2026
Indie mobile apps grow through TikTok. This blueprint sets out what to post and how often, the season, the rules on claims and reviews, and the first 90 days, from 23 sources checked in October 2026.
Core channels:TikTok
Where to show up
Core channels get most of the hours. Support channels get a little. The rest can wait until the core ones work.
| Channel | Role | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Core | Short video is where a small app team can reach strangers without ad money. RevenueCat (Dec 2025) says testimonial-style UGC stopped working and value-first formats still work. AppsFlyer's 2025 report on ad creatives, quoted by RevenueCat, found tutorials and app reviews beat testimonials by 45% in installs per thousand impressions and 17% in day-7 retention. Those are ad numbers, so use them as a hint for organic. We found no audited data on faceless slideshows or screen recordings: run them as tests against your own installs. |
| Support | Reels can carry the same skits and tutorials as TikTok. RevenueCat (Dec 2025) puts skits on TikTok and Reels, and discovery content and carousels on the Instagram and Facebook feeds. We found no Instagram benchmark for apps, so treat it as a second home for finished TikTok work, not a separate plan. | |
| YouTube | Support | RevenueCat (Dec 2025) says expert-commentary clips work best on YouTube Shorts. Longer videos can answer 'how to' searches for the job the app does, but we read no app benchmark for them. |
| Support | Real conversations before the install: peers give feedback (r/iOSProgramming, r/SideProject) and users ask for apps in topic subs. Rules are strict and differ by sub: r/androidapps sends all self-promotion to a sister sub (mod post, 27 May 2026), r/iOSProgramming allows app posts on Saturdays only, and r/languagelearning allows about one self-promotion a month. Treat Reddit as a few allowed posts plus honest answers, not a weekly channel. | |
| Skip | Not researched in depth. None of the sources we read link Pinterest to app installs. Revisit only for apps whose content people save for later (planners, meal plans, workout plans). | |
| X | Skip | Not researched in depth. We found no evidence that X moves installs for consumer apps. It is peer chat (other developers) more than buyer discovery; use it only for build in public if the owner already has an audience. |
| Skip | Consumer apps sell on the phone store. RevenueCat (Dec 2025) lists process documentation as the LinkedIn format; use it only for B2B or professional-productivity apps. | |
| Skip | RevenueCat (Dec 2025) puts discovery content and carousels on the Facebook and Instagram feeds. We read no organic Facebook benchmark for apps, so post there only by cross-posting. | |
| Threads | Skip | Not researched. No source we read links Threads to app installs. |
| Quora | Skip | Not researched. No source we read links Quora to app installs. |
| Google Business Profile | Skip | A consumer app is not a local business. |
| Email newsletter | Skip | Lifecycle messages (win-back, billing retry, grace period) belong to the product stack, not to content marketing. RevenueCat (2026) advises win-back campaigns in the first two months of annual plans and says Android apps can recover 15 to 20% of lost revenue with dunning and grace periods. A launch waitlist page is a first-90-days task. |
Who buys and how they choose
Everyday phone users who want one small job done: keep a habit, plan the day, learn a language, track health, fix a photo. They decide alone, in a minute, on the phone, and judge the app in the first session. Few pay: the median app turns 2.0% of downloads into payers by day 35 (RevenueCat 2026). The owner is usually a solo developer or a team of 2 to 10 who must win attention from store search, short video and creators. Paid installs (Apple Ads, short-video ads) are a separate budget and are not covered here.
Trigger: a pain moment (a skipped habit, a messy day, a trip), a life reset such as a new year or a new job, or a friend or a video that shows the app working. Research is short: store search, screenshots, rating, install. The first session decides: 50.6% of conversions happen on day 0, and 55.4% of cancellations in 3-day trials happen on day 0 (RevenueCat 2026). The user decides alone (a parent for kids' apps). Price sensitivity is high and regional: median prices are $5.99 a week and $34.80 a year, and download-to-paid by day 35 is 2.6 to 2.8% in North America against 0.7 to 1.4% in India and Southeast Asia (RevenueCat 2026). Reality check: the median app earns about $72 a month one year after launch; 17.3% of new apps reach $1K a month within two years and 4.6% reach $10K (RevenueCat 2026).
Where buyers find businesses like this
- App Store search (iOS): the store listing is the main channel, and it is not a social network — Apple: 70% of App Store visitors use search to discover apps, and almost 65% of downloads happen directly after a search (Apple Ads page, 2026). Apple says ranking uses text relevance (title, subtitle, keywords, primary category) and user behaviour (downloads, ratings and reviews) (Apple, App Store search page, 2026). Popular terms are highly competitive for newer and smaller apps; less common terms bring less traffic but less competition (Apple, 2026).
- Google Play search and browse — Play gives three text fields: app name 30, short description 80, full description 4,000 characters (Google Play Console Help, 2026). We found no published ranking weights. US page-view-to-download rate was 16.15% on Google Play against 8.56% on the App Store (AppTweak, data for 2025, published May 2026).
- Apple editorial: Today tab, App of the Day, Editors' Choice, In-App Events — Apple has no checklist for featuring. Send a Featuring Nomination in App Store Connect with at least two weeks' notice, up to three months ahead for wider consideration (Apple, Getting featured, 2026). Events show in search to people who already have the app; people who never downloaded it see screenshots or previews instead (Apple, 2026).
- Short video on TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts, often made by creators — RevenueCat (Dec 2025): testimonial-style UGC lost effectiveness; skits, expert clips, street interviews and tutorials still work. AppsFlyer's 2025 report on ad creatives, quoted by RevenueCat, found tutorials and app reviews beat testimonials by 45% in installs per thousand impressions and 17% in day-7 retention (paid ads, social media apps).
- Launch spikes: Product Hunt and the launch threads of developer communities — Product Hunt says 12:01 am Pacific is the best time to launch if you plan ahead and that you cannot ask people to upvote (Product Hunt, 2026). Guides say the spike is short and only pays if onboarding converts it. We read no app-specific numbers.
- Word of mouth and referral loops — Guides say (RevenueCat, Adapty and WinWinKit blogs) that referred users stay longer. We found no audited data on referred-user conversion or retention, so measure it in your own cohorts.
The first 90 days
Days 1 to 3
Pick one job and one primary category (Apple indexes the primary and the optional secondary category).
Write the name (30 characters), the subtitle (30) and the keyword field (100 characters, commas without spaces, no word already in the name, subtitle or category, no plurals of words used, no 'app'). Aim at less common terms first if the app is new (Apple, 2026).
Days 1 to 7
Check privacy policy, account deletion, subscription wording and health wording against Apple guidelines 5.1.1, 3.1.2 and 1.4.1 before the first review. Add a small site with the privacy policy, support page and press kit.
Days 3 to 10
Make the product page: up to 10 screenshots (the first one to three show in search when there is no preview), an optional preview of up to 30 seconds whose first seconds sell the promise, and a first sentence in the description that carries the point (Apple, 2026).
Days 7 to 14
Decide the paywall and trial.
RevenueCat (2026): day-35 download-to-paid is 10.7% with a hard paywall against 2.1% freemium, but retention after a year is the same (27% against 28%); trial-to-paid is 42.5% for 17 to 32 day trials against 25.5% for 4 days or less. Test one change at a time.
Days 7 to 14
Add the system rating prompt after a success moment (a finished session, a streak), never on launch; at most three prompts in 365 days (Apple, 2026).
Days 10 to 21
Create 2 or 3 custom product pages (one per audience, ad angle or creator), assign non-overlapping keywords, and set up App Analytics views to compare each against the default page (Apple, 2026).
Step 7
At least two weeks before launch, and up to three months ahead if you can: send a Featuring Nomination in App Store Connect (Apple, 2026).
Launch week
Product Hunt at 12:01 am Pacific, no upvote requests, answer every comment.
Post once in each allowed place (App Saturday, r/SideProject's weekly thread, r/droidappshowcase, the sticky of a topic sub).
Weeks 2 to 6
Start the short-video batch: 3 to 5 videos a week in three formats (skit, screen-record tutorial, expert clip).
Hook within 3 seconds. Link every series to its own custom product page.
Weeks 4 to 8
Read the numbers.
Compare custom product page conversion with the default page, day-0 conversion, and the share of trials cancelled on day 0 (RevenueCat 2026 median: 55.4% for 3-day trials). Fix onboarding so the first win comes in the first session.
Weeks 6 to 10
Run one Product Page Optimization test on the icon or the first screenshot (Apple lets you test icons, screenshots and previews).
Reply to every review.
Weeks 8 to 12
Seed about five creators in the category with a free account and their own custom product page link; brief them in writing on 'ad' disclosure; keep only those whose installs convert to trials.

Rhythm: Three to five short videos a week from one batch session. Keep each format for at least ten posts before judging it.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Scenario skit: the problem, then the app | ~35% | 0 to 3 s: say or show the problem in the viewer's own words. 3 to 15 s: act the moment out (the skipped habit, the messy day, the flat photo). 15 to 25 s: screen-record the app solving it in a few taps. Last 3 s: the result and 'link in bio'. — RevenueCat (Dec 2025): this style entertains first and still works, and it fits TikTok and Reels. The hook must land within 3 seconds. |
| Faceless screen-record tutorial | ~30% | Text hook over the first frame ('Do [task] in 20 seconds'). Screen recording with large captions and no face. One step every 3 to 4 seconds, 3 to 5 steps. End on the result screen and the app name. Voice-over is optional. — Tutorials beat testimonials in AppsFlyer's 2025 ad data (via RevenueCat). A solo developer can make these without being on camera. |
| Expert clip with one named-source fact | ~15% | State the fact and its source in the first 3 seconds, give the one-sentence reason, then show the one app feature that applies it. — RevenueCat (Dec 2025) calls this the podcast-clip style and says it fits YouTube Shorts best. The same file can go to Shorts. |
| Faceless slideshow | ~10% | Slide 1: a question or list title. Slides 2 to 6: one tip each, one line of text. Last slide: an app screenshot and one next step. — Cheap to make. Guides say slideshows are shown to strangers without a following, but we found no audited data, so test it. |
| Build in public | ~10% | The developer's voice over a screen recording: what changed this week, why, and one number. — Gives the account a human face. Judgement, not measured. |
What to post about
- The pain moment before people search (skipped habit, cluttered day, flat photo, stalled language)
- One-job tutorials: do the task in the app in 20 seconds
- Progress from the app's own data (streaks, words learned, photos edited), never medical or money promises
- Category know-how with a named source
- Build in public: this week's change and one number
Openings that work
- Problem first (skit): 'POV: it is day 3 and you already skipped your habit again.'
- Time-boxed tutorial: 'Do [task] in 20 seconds. Here is how.'
- Named-source fact: '[Researcher or organisation] found [one fact]. Here is the 20-second fix.' Use only a fact you can link.
- Method before app (RevenueCat, Dec 2025): spend the first 15 to 20 seconds on the how and why, then name the app. It usually lowers click-through and raises intent and lifetime value; the article gives no figures.
- Pattern interrupt: open on an odd scene, then pivot to the product within 3 seconds (the Muzz example in RevenueCat, Dec 2025).
How people find you here: Search and the For You page. Put the problem phrase people type (for example 'habit tracker for adhd' or 'learn spanish on the bus') in the spoken line, the on-screen text and the caption. Guides say TikTok search rewards this. We read no TikTok statement on ranking, so do not promise reach.
How a viewer becomes a client: Link in bio to one custom product page per video series, with a first screenshot that repeats the video's promise. Apple allows unique URLs and keywords for each page and shows impressions, downloads and conversion per page in App Analytics (Apple, 2026). On Android, link the Play listing with a campaign tag. Say the app name aloud and on screen.
Benchmarks: Ad-creative data, not organic: tutorials and app reviews beat testimonials by 45% in installs per thousand impressions and 17% in day-7 retention (AppsFlyer 2025, quoted by RevenueCat Dec 2025, social media apps). Store side: US page-view-to-download 8.56% on the App Store and 16.15% on Google Play (AppTweak, 2025 data).
Avoid on TikTok
- Scripted ring-light testimonials or forced-excitement walkthroughs: viewers 'see right through them' and cost per trial rose while trial-to-paid fell for many apps (RevenueCat, Dec 2025).
- An AI character or a hired actor who says 'I used this app for months'. The FTC rule in force since 21 Oct 2024 (US) bans reviews and testimonials by someone who does not exist or had no real experience, and names AI-made ones.
- Health, weight or money promises. Apple rejects unvalidated health claims (guideline 1.4.1).
- Paid or gifted creator posts without 'ad' or 'sponsored' in the video itself (FTC Disclosures 101, US).
- Asking viewers to rate five stars for a reward (Apple guideline 3.2.2; Google Play policy).
Instagram · support
Reels can carry the same skits and tutorials as TikTok. RevenueCat (Dec 2025) puts skits on TikTok and Reels, and discovery content and carousels on the Instagram and Facebook feeds. We found no Instagram benchmark for apps, so treat it as a second home for finished TikTok work, not a separate plan.
Rhythm: Re-post three of the week's TikTok videos as Reels and add one carousel a week. Drop it if it costs more than 30 minutes a week.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Reel from the TikTok skit or tutorial | ~65% | Same first 3 seconds and same cut as on TikTok, exported as a clean file. End on the result screen and the app name. — No extra filming. RevenueCat (Dec 2025) names Reels as a home for skits. |
| Save-worthy carousel | ~35% | Slide 1: a claim or a question. Slides 2 to 6: one tip each, with a screenshot of the app doing that step. Slide 7: the next step and the app name. — RevenueCat (Dec 2025) names carousels and discovery content as the feed formats. |
What to post about
- The job the app does, shown in 20 seconds
- Checklists and how-tos people save
- Progress from the app's own data (streaks, words learned, photos edited)
Openings that work
- List title: '5 settings that make a new habit stick'
- Question: 'Why do you quit every planner in week two?'
- Before and after of the user's own screen: 'Same photo, 10 seconds apart'
How people find you here: Keywords in the caption and in the slide text. Guides say; We read no Instagram statement on ranking, so do not promise reach.
How a viewer becomes a client: Link in bio to the same custom product page as the video's series. Say the app name aloud and on screen.
Avoid on Instagram
- Claiming results the app cannot show (weight lost, money saved): Apple rejects unvalidated health claims (guideline 1.4.1) and the FTC treats them as deceptive (US).
- Posting a paid or gifted creator's Reel without 'ad' or 'sponsored' in the video itself (FTC, US).
- Buying followers, likes or reviews (FTC fake-review rule, US, since Oct 2024).

RevenueCat (Dec 2025) says expert-commentary clips work best on YouTube Shorts. Longer videos can answer 'how to' searches for the job the app does, but we read no app benchmark for them.
Rhythm: One Short a week cut from the TikTok batch. One 3 to 6 minute tutorial a month if the app solves a problem people search for.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Expert clip as a Short | ~50% | A named-source fact in the first 3 seconds, the one-sentence reason, the one app feature that applies it, the app name in the last 5 seconds. — RevenueCat (Dec 2025): the Jumpspeak example, best on Shorts. |
| Screen-record tutorial (Short or 3 to 6 minutes) | ~50% | The title is the search phrase ('How to [task] on iPhone'). Show the whole task in order. End card with the next step. — Matches how people search; tutorials beat testimonials in AppsFlyer's 2025 ad data (via RevenueCat). |
What to post about
- The exact how-to the app solves
- Named-source facts
- What is new in the latest update
Openings that work
- 'How to [task] on iPhone in under a minute'
- '[Source] says [fact]. Here is how to use it.'
How people find you here: YouTube search for the task phrase: put it in the title and the first line of the description. Guides say; We read no YouTube statement on ranking.
How a viewer becomes a client: Pinned comment and first description line link to the custom product page. Say the app name in the last 5 seconds.
Avoid on YouTube
- A statistic with no named source you can link.
- Medical, weight or money promises (Apple guideline 1.4.1; FTC, US).

Real conversations before the install: peers give feedback (r/iOSProgramming, r/SideProject) and users ask for apps in topic subs.
Rhythm: One post in the one allowed place per sub, once. Otherwise answer questions twice a week without a link. Stop in a sub at the first removal.
| Format | Share | How a good one is built |
|---|---|---|
| Entry in the sub's self-promotion thread | ~50% | Line 1: what it is and who it is for. Line 2: what is free. Line 3: one thing you learned building it. End with one specific question. — Subs such as r/SideProject (weekly share thread) and r/languagelearning ('Share Your Resources' sticky) point promotion here (guides and a developer's launch list, undated). |
| Build story | ~30% | Title states the job and the lesson. Body: what you tried, the numbers (installs, trial rate, what failed), what you changed. No bare landing-page link. — Guides say context and story matter; bare landing-page drops get removed (Reddit guides, 2026). |
| Helpful answer with no link | ~20% | Answer the question fully in the comment. Name the app only if the sub's rules and the question allow it, and say you made it. — Builds the account history that mods and users look for. Judgement. |
What to post about
- What I built and why
- What the numbers showed after N days
- Answers to category questions (habits, language study, photo editing)
Openings that work
- 'I built [app] to fix [problem]. Here is what 90 days taught me.'
- 'What I changed in onboarding after [N] users quit on day one'
How people find you here: Posts in the sub's own thread or on its allowed day. Reddit search and the title carry the job words. Guides say; Reddit's ranking was not read.
How a viewer becomes a client: Store link only where the sub allows it; otherwise put it in your profile and say so only if asked. Use a tagged link so you can see the day's installs.
Avoid on Reddit
- Posting outside the allowed thread or day: r/iOSGaming bans for promotion outside 'Developer Saturday' (launch list, undated).
- Asking for upvotes or reviews.
- The same text in several subs on the same day.
- Self-promotion in r/androidapps: it is not allowed there; use the sister sub (mod post seen on a mirror, 27 May 2026).
Channels to leave for later
- Pinterest — Not researched in depth. None of the sources we read link Pinterest to app installs. Revisit only for apps whose content people save for later (planners, meal plans, workout plans).
- X — Not researched in depth. We found no evidence that X moves installs for consumer apps. It is peer chat (other developers) more than buyer discovery; use it only for build in public if the owner already has an audience.
- LinkedIn — Consumer apps sell on the phone store. RevenueCat (Dec 2025) lists process documentation as the LinkedIn format; use it only for B2B or professional-productivity apps.
- Facebook — RevenueCat (Dec 2025) puts discovery content and carousels on the Facebook and Instagram feeds. We read no organic Facebook benchmark for apps, so post there only by cross-posting.
- Threads — Not researched. No source we read links Threads to app installs.
- Quora — Not researched. No source we read links Quora to app installs.
- Google Business Profile — A consumer app is not a local business.
- Email newsletter — Lifecycle messages (win-back, billing retry, grace period) belong to the product stack, not to content marketing. RevenueCat (2026) advises win-back campaigns in the first two months of annual plans and says Android apps can recover 15 to 20% of lost revenue with dunning and grace periods. A launch waitlist page is a first-90-days task.
Google and the blog
Support channel. A small site is needed anyway: Apple requires a privacy policy link in App Store Connect and inside the app (guideline 5.1.1, 2026), and the site holds the support page, the press kit and the custom product page links. Search pages can win 'best [category] app' and 'alternative' queries, but we read no benchmark for app-site SEO: guides say. Keep it to a few pages that answer buyer questions.
| Article | Searches like | How the winners are built |
|---|---|---|
| How to do the job (a tutorial that ends in the app) | “how to build a habit that sticks”, “how to learn spanish fast”, “how to plan your day”, “how to remove the background from a photo on iphone” | Guides say: answer in the first paragraph, numbered steps with one screenshot per step, one honest line on what the app does not do, one link to a custom product page. Keep claims to what the app shows. |
| Best [category] apps | “best habit tracker app”, “best language learning app”, “best photo editor app for iphone”, “best to do list app” | A list that includes the owner's app, with competitors named and compared on price, platform, ratings and what each does best, plus the date of the last update. Say plainly that you make one of the apps: the FTC rule (US, 2024) bans a company-controlled site posing as an independent review site. |
| Alternative-to page | “[big app name] alternative”, “apps like [big app name]”, “[big app name] free alternative”, “[big app name] vs [category] apps” | Guides say: one honest table (price, free tier, platforms, what is missing), who should stay with the big app, who should switch. No claim you cannot prove. |
| Price, trial and cancel help page | “[app name] free trial”, “is [app name] worth it”, “how to cancel [app name] subscription”, “[app name] pricing” | One plain price table (weekly, monthly, yearly, trial length), what is included, how to cancel in iPhone and Android settings with screenshots, the refund path. Apple guideline 3.1.2 requires describing what the user gets for the price before asking to subscribe; ROSCA (US) requires a simple way to cancel. |
When searches peak: We did not measure search peaks. Apple's keyword guide calls seasonal terms such as 'Christmas' or 'summer' high-traffic and highly competitive (Apple, 2026). Check Google Trends and App Store search suggestions for your category, publish early enough to be indexed, and send Apple nominations up to three months ahead (Apple, 2026).
Where businesses in this niche get featured and linked
- Product Hunt launch page (official guidance, 2026)
- Apple editorial through a Featuring Nomination in App Store Connect (Apple, 2026)
- Blogs and resource directories that review apps in the category. For language apps one developer's launch list (undated) names Tofugu, GaijinPot Blog, All Language Resources, and the WaniKani and Japan Reference forums; find the equivalents for habits, health, productivity and photo.
Communities on Reddit
Read the rules and the top threads before you post. Most of these remove promotion; a useful answer is what earns a visit.
| Subreddit | Who is there | What works and what is allowed |
|---|---|---|
| r/iOSProgramming · not checked | peers | The App Saturday post with what you built, the stack and one lesson. Honest technical questions in other threads. Promotion: App posts only on Saturdays ('App Saturday'). A mod announcement says 'You may post about one app, once per year' and repeat offenders get banned (seen on a mirror, 2026; confirm in the sidebar). |
| r/androiddev · not checked | peers | not verified. Promotion: not verified: read the pinned rules before posting. |
| r/SideProject · about 300K (a Reddit marketing guide, 2026) | peers | A story post: the problem, what you built, what the numbers showed. Promotion: Weekly 'Share your project' threads welcome self-promotion if you also engage with other projects. Bare landing-page drops still get removed (guides, 2026). |
| r/iosapps · about 109K (third-party summary, undated) | buyers | not verified. Promotion: Self-promotion is the most common post theme there; the rules were not read. |
| r/androidapps · not checked | buyers | Answering 'which app does X' threads without self-promotion. Judgement. Promotion: No self-promotion in the main sub: app ideas, tester requests and feedback requests go to the sister sub r/droidappshowcase (mod post dated 27 May 2026, seen on a mirror; confirm). |
| r/droidappshowcase · not checked | both | not verified. Promotion: The place the r/androidapps mods point to for self-promotion, tester requests and feedback (mod post, 27 May 2026). Rules not read. |
| r/languagelearning · about 3.3M (a developer's launch list, undated) | buyers | A sticky-thread entry that states what is free. Promotion: Very strict. Use the 'Share Your Resources' sticky. The app must support several languages, be released and have free features; new members cannot post paid products; about one self-promotion a month (launch list, undated). |
| r/LearnJapanese · about 272K (a developer's launch list, undated) | buyers | A resource post that says you are the developer and asks for feedback. Promotion: Post first in the weekly 'Materials & Self-Promo Wednesday' thread, then ask the mods for a one-time front-page post. Kana-only apps are disallowed (launch list, undated). |
The year in this niche
| When | What matters |
|---|---|
| Every release with new content or a real feature | Make it an In-App Event (up to 31 days; promote up to 14 days before it starts; up to 10 published at once) and send a Featuring Nomination two weeks to three months ahead (Apple, 2026). Price promotions with nothing new are poor event candidates (Apple, 2026). |
| Launch day | Product Hunt: 12:01 am Pacific is the best start if you plan ahead (Product Hunt, 2026). Post once in the one allowed place per subreddit. Be on the page to answer every comment. |
| January (new-year resets) | Judgement, no search data read: habit, health, productivity and language apps expect their biggest burst. Prepare custom product pages and videos in November and December. |
| Late August to September (back to school and work) | Judgement, no data read: planners, focus and language apps. Reuse the January assets with a routine angle. |
| Black Friday to year end | Judgement: subscription offers and gift-season creative. Watch refunds and cancellations in the next cohort. |
| Day 0 to 1, month 1 and month 12 after each purchase | Most cancellations cluster here: 84% of 3-day-trial cancellations happen on day 0 or 1, month 1 holds 35% of annual cancellations, and cancellations rise again before the month-12 renewal (RevenueCat 2026). Fix onboarding for day 0 and add a value reminder before renewal. |
Partners who share your audience
- Creators in the app's category (teachers, coaches, photographers, productivity writers). Give each one a unique custom product page URL so their installs show separately in App Analytics (Apple, 2026) and put disclosure terms in writing (FTC, US).
- Apple's editorial team through Featuring Nominations; Apple may then email Admin, App Manager and Marketing roles to ask for promotional artwork (Apple, 2026).
- Makers of non-competing apps used at a different moment (sleep plus habit, planner plus focus timer): swap mentions in content. Never force installs: Apple guideline 3.2.2 forbids forcing users to download other apps, and Google Play bans incentivising installs of other apps as an app's main function (Google Play policy).
- Niche blogs and resource directories that review apps in the category (see blog link sources).
- Product Hunt: launch the product yourself. Product Hunt says there is no discernible advantage in a third-party hunter and company accounts are prohibited (Product Hunt, 2026).
Rules that apply
- Ratings and reviews (Apple, worldwide): apps must not force users to rate or review (guideline 3.2.2); use the system prompt, and custom review prompts are disallowed (5.6.1); up to three prompts in 365 days (Apple, product page guidance, 2026). Manipulating charts, search, reviews or referrals is not permitted (5.6.3) and repeated manipulation can end the developer account (5.6).
- Ratings and reviews (Google Play, worldwide): no manipulation of ratings, reviews or install counts, no rewards or incentives for ratings or reviews, no deceptive pop-ups that force a rating, and no review content that offers coupons or affiliate links (Google Play policy, 2026).
- Fake reviews and testimonials (US, FTC rule in force since 21 Oct 2024): bans fake or AI-invented reviewers, buying such reviews, pay that depends on a positive or negative sentiment, undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression, and fake social-media indicators; civil penalties up to about $52,000 per violation, adjusted yearly (FTC, Aug 2024). An AI person who claims to be a customer is the case to avoid.
- Creator and influencer disclosure (US, FTC Disclosures 101): free product or payment is a material connection; put 'ad', 'advertisement' or 'sponsored' in the video itself, not only in the caption; avoid 'sp', 'collab', 'thanks' or 'ambassador' alone; repeat during live streams. The guidance puts the duty on the creator, so brief creators in writing.
- Subscriptions (Apple, worldwide): describe what the user gets for the price before asking them to subscribe (3.1.2(c)); a subscription lasts at least seven days; subscribers must get what they paid for without extra tasks such as posting on social media or uploading contacts (3.1.2(a)). A referral reward must be a bonus, not a condition of the paid features (my reading of 3.1.2(a)).
- Subscriptions (US): the FTC click-to-cancel rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit in July 2025 on procedural grounds, but ROSCA still applies: disclose material terms, get express consent, give a simple cancellation path; penalties up to $53,088 per violation; state auto-renewal laws apply (Cooley, Jul 2025).
- Health claims (Apple, worldwide): health measurements need disclosed data and method; apps that claim to measure blood pressure, temperature, glucose or oxygen with only the phone's sensors are not permitted; remind users to see a doctor (guideline 1.4.1). Keep marketing copy inside the same limits.
- Privacy (Apple, worldwide): privacy policy link in App Store Connect and in the app; consent for data collection; in-app account deletion if you offer accounts (5.1.1). You must clearly disclose where personal data is shared with third parties, including third-party AI, and get explicit permission (5.1.2(i)).
- Kids (Apple, worldwide): apps made primarily for kids should have no third-party analytics or advertising, and Kids Category apps need a parental gate before links out or purchases (guidelines 1.3 and 5.1.4). Do not aim creator content at children without checking these.
- Metadata (Apple, worldwide): app names are limited to 30 characters; keywords must describe the app and may not contain trademarks, celebrity names, competing app names or prices (2.3.7 and the App Store search page); screenshots must show the app in use (2.3.3); a primary category that does not fit is grounds for rejection (Apple, 2026).
What to measure
- Store conversion: US page-view-to-download averaged 8.56% on the App Store and 16.15% on Google Play (AppTweak, 2025 data). Compare only inside one tool: definitions differ. Apple says developers see 2.5 points more conversion on average from a custom product page than the default page, against a 1.6% default-page average (Apple, 2026; metric not defined).
- Download to trial at day 30: Health & Fitness 6.9%, Education 6.5%, Utilities 6.5% (RevenueCat 2026 medians).
- Trial to paid: 37.7% in Health & Fitness, 22.2% in Photo & Video; 42.5% for 17 to 32 day trials and 25.5% for 4 days or less (RevenueCat 2026 medians).
- Download to paid at day 35: 2.0% overall, 2.9% in Health & Fitness, 2.6 to 2.8% in North America (RevenueCat 2026 medians).
- Day-0 share of trial cancellations: 55.4% for 3-day trials, 39.8% for 7-day, 35.7% for 14-day (RevenueCat 2026). Above that means onboarding is losing people.
- Annual plans: about 27 to 28% of yearly subscribers remain after one year; month 1 holds 35% of annual cancellations (RevenueCat 2026).
- Revenue per install at day 60: median $0.34; $3.09 with a hard paywall against $0.38 freemium (RevenueCat 2026).
- Involuntary churn: 31% of Google Play cancellations and 14% of App Store cancellations are billing failures (RevenueCat 2026).
- Average rating and number of ratings: Apple says ratings influence search rank (Apple, 2026). Also track rank for 5 to 10 target keywords.
- Per creator and per video series: installs and trials through its own custom product page (Apple App Analytics, 2026).

Questions
Asked about indie mobile apps
What is the best marketing channel for indie mobile apps?
TikTok. Short video is where a small app team can reach strangers without ad money. Those are ad numbers, so use them as a hint for…
How often should indie mobile apps post on TikTok?
Three to five short videos a week from one batch session. Keep each format for at least ten posts before judging it.
Is X worth it for indie mobile apps?
Usually not at the start: Not researched in depth. We found no evidence that X moves installs for consumer apps. It is peer chat (other developers) more than buyer discovery; use it only for build in public if the owner already has an audience.
Which months matter most for indie mobile apps?
Every release with new content or a real feature: Make it an In-App Event (up to 31 days; promote up to 14 days before it starts; up to 10 published at once) and send a Featuring Nomination two weeks to three months ahead (Apple, 2026). Price promotions with nothing new are poor event candidates (Apple, 2026). Launch day: Product Hunt: 12:01 am Pacific is the best start if you plan ahead (Product Hunt, 2026). Post…
