Core channels get most of the hours. Support channels get a little. The rest can wait until the core ones work.

ChannelRoleWhy
InstagramCoreCouples vet a photographer's portfolio on social media (Zola 2026) and 87% made planning choices based on it (Zola 2026). But only 19% of Millennials and 8% of Gen Z call Instagram the most essential platform (Zola 2026), so it is the shop window that confirms a recommendation, not the main discovery engine. Collab posts show on both profile grids and go to both sets of followers (HubSpot 2023), which puts a wedding in front of the venue's and planner's followers (guides say these are engaged couples and future clients).
TikTokSupport50% of 2026 couples use TikTok for inspiration, up from 41% in 2025; 60% of Gen Z do; 25% call it their most invaluable planning tool, up from 15% (Zola 2026). It is where couples pick a look; the booking still runs through your portfolio and inquiry form (judgment, no source separates the two).
PinterestSupportPinterest is the most-used inspiration source for 2026 couples: 77% (75% in 2025) and 83% of Gen Z (Zola 2026); The Knot names it the most-used inspiration platform too (The Knot 2026). Couples save looks, not photographers, so every pin must link to a page that sells you: a real-wedding or venue post.
RedditSupport9% of 2026 couples use Reddit for inspiration, up from 3% (Zola 2026). r/weddingplanning has about 1.6M members (Hive Index, Oct 2026) and 'asking for a photographer' is a common thread type there (Hive Index, Oct 2026). Wedding subs often ban vendor promotion, so this is a place to answer, not to sell.
Google Business ProfileSupportMost wedding photographers are service-area businesses. 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, 68% need four or more stars (55% a year earlier), and 74% only consider reviews from the last three months (BrightLocal 2026). 45% now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% (BrightLocal 2026).
YouTubeSkipZola's 2026 list of where couples find inspiration is Pinterest, TikTok, influencers and Reddit, with no YouTube (Zola 2026). Wedding films are a videographer's job; do not build a channel for photos.
XSkipX is not among the sources couples name (Zola 2026) and photographers' work needs images and search, not a feed of short text.
LinkedInSkipCouples do not look for wedding photographers on LinkedIn. Corporate events are a different niche with different buyers.
FacebookSkipFacebook is not among the inspiration sources couples named (Zola 2026). Award-winning photographers list Facebook, Google and bridal shows behind referrals (SLR Lounge, undated). Time is better spent on Instagram, Pinterest and the blog.
ThreadsSkipNo source shows couples choosing photographers there, and it duplicates Instagram effort.
QuoraSkipCouples ask these questions on Google, Pinterest and Reddit. A blog post answers the same question and works for years.
Email newsletterSkipCouples hire once. The repeat audience is a short list of venues and planners; write to them directly a few times a year instead of running a newsletter product.

Who buys and how they choose

Engaged couples, mostly Gen Z and Millennials (Gen Z is 51% of couples marrying in 2026, Zola 2026), often with parents who help pay. They want a photographer whose portfolio looks like the wedding they imagine, who answers fast and is easy company for ten hours. They also want content for social media: 21% plan to make social-first content and 40% of those ask their photographer or videographer to shoot it (Zola 2026).

Trigger: the engagement. About 40% of engagements fall between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day (The Knot 2018) and about 19% in December alone (InStore 2023-24). 19% of couples start planning before they are engaged and the average engagement is 18 months (Zola 2026). The venue usually comes first (82% book it first, per a The Knot Worldwide page citing its 2025 study; not checked against the study), then the big vendors. One unsourced industry blog says couples book a photographer about nine months out (ISPWP 2018). 88% of couples hired a photographer (The Knot 2026). Couples compare: 37% contacted more vendors than planned to find options within budget, and responsiveness was key to trust for 52% (The Knot 2026). The couple decides, with parents when they pay. After style, price is the filter: a 2026 cost guide citing The Knot puts the US average at about $3,000 and Zola's marketplace at about $4,400 (Paperlust 2026; not checked at source).

Where buyers find businesses like this

  • Venue and vendor recommendations: couples usually book the venue first and get its preferred-vendor list, then planners and other vendors refer a photographer — 82% book the venue first and a list averages six vendors, about 20 minutes of research per vendor (The Knot Worldwide page citing its 2025 study; figure not checked against the study). Award-winning photographers self-report that roughly 71% to 90% of bookings are referrals from past clients, vendors and venues (SLR Lounge, undated, self-reported).
  • Instagram portfolio check after a recommendation: couples judge a photographer by the social feed — Couples choose photographers based on their social media portfolios, no percentage given (Zola 2026); 87% of couples made planning choices based on social media (Zola 2026).
  • Pinterest and TikTok to pick a look before picking a person — Inspiration sources for 2026 couples: Pinterest 77% (75% in 2025), TikTok 50% (41% in 2025), influencers 14%, Reddit 9% (3% in 2025) (Zola 2026).
  • Google search: '[city] wedding photographer' and '[venue] wedding photographer' — Guides say couples search by city, region or exact venue (SEO agency guides 2025-26). One photographer wrote in April 2025 that most clients still find them through Google, thanks to blog posts (Photo Business Help newsletter 2025); anecdote, not a survey.
  • AI assistants asked for local recommendations — 45% of US consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier (BrightLocal 2026, all local businesses); 54% of couples use AI for some wedding planning (Zola 2026).
  • Marketplaces with reviews: The Knot, WeddingWire, Zola — The Knot's marketplace searches by wedding location, category and price; We found no source giving the share of couples who find photographers there. Consumers use an average of six review sites (BrightLocal 2026).

Couples vet a photographer's portfolio on social media (Zola 2026) and 87% made planning choices based on it (Zola 2026). Rhythm: About 14 to 16 posts a month: 2 carousels and 1 to 2 Reels a week, Stories on shoot days, one Collab post per wedding. The average brand posts about 20 a month: 8 Reels, 5 carousels, 7 images (Socialinsider 2025).

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Full-wedding carousel30%Slide 1: the strongest single frame, no text. Slide 2: the place (venue wide shot at the hour of the ceremony). Slides 3 to 8 in day order: a detail (rings, invitation), the first look or aisle moment, one big emotion, a family or guest laugh, a portrait in the best light. Last slide: the party frame. Caption line 1: venue, city, season. Then credits for planner, florist, venue, and one line: 'Booking [year] weddings in [region].' — Carousels have the highest average engagement of the feed formats (0.55%, Reels 0.52%, images 0.37%; Socialinsider 2025) and one swipe through a day shows what a couple would receive.
Sneak-peek Reel within 48 hours20%0 to 2 s: the best single frame, full screen. Then 8 to 12 stills in day order, 0.4 to 0.8 s each, cut to the beat, ending on the reaction frame. Caption: venue and city in line 1, vendors credited. Upload natively in 9:16, no borders, no watermark. — Instagram says it shows low-resolution, watermarked, bordered, mostly-text and already-posted reels less (Instagram, 'Ranking explained'). A fast teaser also answers the social-first demand (21% of couples, Zola 2026).
Behind the scenes, then the finished photo15%Beat 1 (1.5 s): a phone clip from your shoulder at a moment (the veil being fixed, the aisle light). Beat 2 (1.5 s): hard cut to the final photo of that same second. Repeat 4 to 6 times. End on a title card with venue and city. Keep the dress hidden until after the wedding day. — Guides say film behind-the-scenes regularly and reveal the final photo later, so one shoot feeds many videos (WeddingPro 2021).
Collab post with a venue or planner10%A post built around the venue: the three best spots, the best hour for light, one couple at each spot. Invite the venue or planner as co-author before you publish and ask them to accept in the app; guides say an invite cannot be added after posting. Credit the rest of the team in the caption. — Collabs go live on both profile grids and to both sets of followers, and likes and comments are shared (HubSpot 2023). They work in feed posts and Reels only (HubSpot 2023).
Plan-your-photography carousel15%Cover: the question as a couple types it ('How many hours of photography do we need?'). Slides 2 to 6: one answer per slide, each with a real example from a recent wedding. Last slide: 'Send this to your fiance' and how to ask about dates. — Answers the budget and coverage worries couples carry (37% contact more vendors than planned, The Knot 2026). Guides say Mosseri named sends per reach as a key signal for reaching people who do not follow you (Social Media Today, Jan 2025, secondhand).
Couple's words10%One photo, one sentence from a real review in the couple's own words, first names, venue. Ask permission each time and use only real reviews. — 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal 2026).

What to post about

  • Real weddings, one venue at a time
  • Light and place: what a venue looks like at the hour of the ceremony
  • Real moments: family, tears, laughter, not only posed portraits
  • Planning help: timeline, coverage hours, engagement session outfits and places
  • The team: planner, florist, venue and second shooter credited
  • How you work, from behind the camera
  • Couple reviews and gallery reactions

Openings that work

  • Venue plus moment: 'The first look at [Venue] lasted 40 seconds. Watch his face.'
  • Light: 'Why couples at [Venue] ask for the 5 pm ceremony.'
  • Planner's eye: 'What [Planner] checks ten minutes before the aisle.'
  • The question couples type: 'How many hours of wedding photography do you really need?'
  • Same second: 'Phone clip vs final frame.'
  • Price honesty: 'What a [city] wedding photography package includes.'

How people find you here: Guides say Instagram search matches the text of names, usernames, bios, captions and places (Wordtracker and Search Engine Journal summaries of Mosseri's statements, secondhand, not opened by me; Instagram's own ranking page does not list Search signals). So put the job and the place in the Name field ('[Name] | Wedding photographer, [region]'), open every caption with venue, city and season, and add the location tag at the venue so your post sits on the venue's place page. Collabs with venues and planners reach their followers. Guides say keywords in captions now matter more than hashtags (Phable Labs 2025); use a few specific tags (venue, city) at most.

How a viewer becomes a client: The profile does the selling. The link in bio goes to one inquiry page asking date, venue, guest count and budget range. Pin three full-wedding carousels of your best-fit couple. Highlights: Pricing, FAQ, Process, Reviews. Reply to DMs and inquiries within hours: responsiveness was key to trust for 52% of couples (The Knot 2026). Show a price range somewhere, because 37% of couples contacted more vendors than planned to find options within budget (The Knot 2026).

Benchmarks: Average engagement rate: carousels 0.55%, Reels 0.52%, images 0.37%, all formats 0.48%, down 24% on the year (Socialinsider 2025 data, all industries). No wedding-specific benchmark found.

Avoid on Instagram

  • Do not show the dress or a look reveal before the wedding day has happened (guides say it can upset the couple and the planner).
  • Do not post faces of guests or children, or a couple's full gallery, without written permission in the contract.
  • Do not repost TikTok videos with the watermark: Instagram shows watermarked and already-posted reels less (Instagram, 'Ranking explained').
  • Do not try to add a Collab co-author after publishing; invite before you post (guides say).
  • Do not tag vendors you did not work with, and do not write 'featured in' for a submission that is not live.
  • Do not hide price completely: couples are shopping against a budget (The Knot 2026).

TikTok · support

50% of 2026 couples use TikTok for inspiration, up from 41% in 2025; 60% of Gen Z do; 25% call it their most invaluable planning tool, up from 15% (Zola 2026). It is where couples pick a look; the booking still runs through your portfolio and inquiry form (judgment, no source separates the two).

Rhythm: 2 videos a week cut from the same footage as the Reels, exported without the Instagram watermark.

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Venue spots35%On-screen title in the first second: 'Best 3 photo spots at [Venue]'. Three beats, one per spot: the place with no people, then a real couple photo from that spot, then the time of day it works. End: 'Date open? Link in bio.' — Guides say couples search by venue name (SEO agency guides 2025-26); a video that answers the venue question gets saved.
Photographer's-eye POV25%A phone clip from your shoulder mid-day (the aisle, the first dance) with one line of on-screen text about what you are watching for. Cut to the final photo at the end. — Shows how you work, which a gallery cannot (guides say behind-the-scenes works, WeddingPro 2021).
A planning question answered25%Talk to camera for 20 to 30 seconds. The question is the title ('Do we need a second shooter?'). Answer in three points, then one example from a real wedding. — Mirrors the questions couples ask before booking; 54% of couples already use AI for planning questions (Zola 2026), so a specific answer from someone who has shot many weddings stands out (judgment).
Gallery reaction15%The couple opens the sneak peek or gallery on a phone (filmed with their permission), cut to the photos that made them react. — Real reactions are social proof in video form; needs written permission.

What to post about

  • Venue spots
  • Planning questions answered
  • The photographer's view of the day
  • Gallery reactions
  • The social-first add-on: the vertical teaser you deliver

Openings that work

  • 'Best 3 photo spots at [Venue].'
  • 'Three things I tell every couple before the first look.'
  • 'POV: you are the photographer when her dad sees her.'
  • 'Three questions to ask any wedding photographer.'

How people find you here: Guides say TikTok search reads on-screen text, spoken words and the caption. Say 'wedding photographer in [city]' and the venue name in the first sentence and on screen. Do not depend on hashtags.

How a viewer becomes a client: Link in bio to the inquiry page. Answer 'where is this?' comments with the venue name and an invitation to message. Pin a 'how to book' video.

Benchmarks: Couples using TikTok for inspiration: 50% overall, 60% of Gen Z, 43% of Millennials (Zola 2026). No view or inquiry benchmark for photographers found.

Avoid on TikTok

  • Do not post only trends or dances. Couples pick photographers from portfolios (Zola 2026), so every video must show finished photographs.
  • Do not reveal the dress early or film guests and children without consent.
  • Do not use the same caption on every video.

Pinterest · support

Pinterest is the most-used inspiration source for 2026 couples: 77% (75% in 2025) and 83% of Gen Z (Zola 2026); The Knot names it the most-used inspiration platform too (The Knot 2026). Couples save looks, not photographers, so every pin must link to a page that sells you: a real-wedding or venue post.

Rhythm: 5 to 10 pins a week, batch-made once a week from the newest blog posts (about 20 minutes).

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Real-wedding pin50%Vertical 2:3 image of the strongest frame in the post. Title: '[Venue] wedding photos: [season] ceremony, [City]'. Description: two plain sentences with venue, city and style. Link: the real-wedding post. — Guides say pins keep working for months and the title carries the search words.
Location or venue guide pin30%Vertical collage of four images of the same place at different hours. Title in the image and in the title field: '12 [City] engagement photo locations'. Link: the guide. — Engagement season (November to February) sends couples looking for places and outfits.
Planning-answer pin20%A text card over one photo: 'How many hours of wedding photography do we need?' Link: the cost and coverage guide. — Brings couples who are comparing, not only dreaming.

What to post about

  • Venues by name
  • Seasons and light
  • Engagement session places and outfits
  • Wedding styles: elopement, garden, barn, city hall
  • Timeline and planning answers

Openings that work

  • '[Venue] wedding photos.'
  • 'Spring wedding at [Venue]: ceremony and portraits.'
  • '12 [City] engagement photo locations.'

How people find you here: Guides say Pinterest works like a search engine: pin title, description and board name carry the words couples type (venue, city, season, style). Make one board per venue or style so the board itself ranks.

How a viewer becomes a client: Pin to blog post to inquiry form. Add UTM tags and check which posts bring inquiries. The last paragraph of each post says which dates are open.

Benchmarks: Couples using Pinterest for inspiration: 77% in 2026, 75% in 2025; 83% of Gen Z (Zola 2026). No photographer-specific click or inquiry benchmark found.

Avoid on Pinterest

  • Do not pin without a link to your own page.
  • Do not pin children's faces or client names without permission.
  • Do not use text-only graphics with no photograph; couples are there for the look.

Reddit · support

9% of 2026 couples use Reddit for inspiration, up from 3% (Zola 2026). r/weddingplanning has about 1.6M members (Hive Index, Oct 2026) and 'asking for a photographer' is a common thread type there (Hive Index, Oct 2026). Wedding subs often ban vendor promotion, so this is a place to answer, not to sell.

Rhythm: 2 to 3 useful answers a week, about 15 minutes, from an account with a history of helping.

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Specific answer to a price or coverage question70%Answer in the first sentence ('That is in range for an eight-hour day in a mid-size city'). Then what that price usually includes and three questions to ask any photographer. No link, no pitch. Mention being a photographer only if the sub's rules allow. — Helpful, specific answers are what builds a reputation for a vendor on a sub that dislikes ads (judgment).
Venue or location advice30%If the question is about a place you know, say what works there (light, timing, permits) in four or five plain lines. — Only a local photographer can answer it well.

What to post about

  • What a photography package includes
  • Coverage hours and timelines
  • Questions to ask a photographer
  • Engagement session logistics

Openings that work

  • Answer first, reasons second.
  • 'Ask these three things before you sign.'

How people find you here: Strangers find you through your answers and your profile history. Reddit threads and Google both surface old posts.

How a viewer becomes a client: Rarely direct. A reader opens your profile; whether a link is allowed depends on the sub. Never pitch inside a thread.

Benchmarks: Couples using Reddit for inspiration: 9% in 2026, 3% in 2025 (Zola 2026).

Avoid on Reddit

  • Do not post your portfolio or link your site in r/weddingplanning; read the rules first (r/weddingdress bans business ads, seen on a mirror of its rules).
  • Do not DM people who ask for a photographer.
  • Do not use a brand-new account.

Most wedding photographers are service-area businesses.

Rhythm: A review request at gallery delivery for every couple, a reply to every review within a week, new photos after each wedding, one post a month.

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Review reply40%Thank the couple by first name and mention one real detail of their day (venue, season, a moment). No template text. — 89% expect owners to respond and 50% are put off by templated replies (BrightLocal 2026).
Photo set from a recent wedding40%Ten images: venue wide, ceremony, a portrait, details, the party. Caption names the venue and city. — Keeps the profile fresh for people who check the last three months.
Profile post20%Two sentences: the wedding, the venue, one link to the post about it. — Sends profile viewers to the portfolio.

What to post about

  • Reviews that name a venue or a moment
  • Recent weddings by venue
  • Service area: the cities and venues you cover

How people find you here: Use the fewest, most specific categories, with 'Wedding photographer' first. A home-based photographer sets a service area and hides the home address (Google guidelines for service-area businesses). The business name must be the real-world name, with no keywords, locations or service words added (Google guidelines).

How a viewer becomes a client: Call, message and website buttons; the website link goes to the inquiry page. Reviews that name the venue answer 'is this photographer good at my venue' (judgment).

Benchmarks: 68% require 4+ stars, 31% only 4.5+, 10% require 5; 74% only consider reviews from the last three months and 32% want reviews from the last two weeks; 89% expect owner replies and 19% expect a same-day reply (BrightLocal 2026).

Avoid on Google Business Profile

  • Do not put keywords or the city in the business name (Google guidelines).
  • Do not write, buy or trade for reviews, and do not threaten couples over a review (FTC rule, effective 21 Oct 2024).
  • Do not leave reviews unanswered; 42% are unlikely to use a business that never replies (BrightLocal 2026).

Channels to leave for later

  • YouTube — Zola's 2026 list of where couples find inspiration is Pinterest, TikTok, influencers and Reddit, with no YouTube (Zola 2026). Wedding films are a videographer's job; do not build a channel for photos.
  • X — X is not among the sources couples name (Zola 2026) and photographers' work needs images and search, not a feed of short text.
  • LinkedIn — Couples do not look for wedding photographers on LinkedIn. Corporate events are a different niche with different buyers.
  • Facebook — Facebook is not among the inspiration sources couples named (Zola 2026). Award-winning photographers list Facebook, Google and bridal shows behind referrals (SLR Lounge, undated). Time is better spent on Instagram, Pinterest and the blog.
  • Threads — No source shows couples choosing photographers there, and it duplicates Instagram effort.
  • Quora — Couples ask these questions on Google, Pinterest and Reddit. A blog post answers the same question and works for years.
  • Email newsletter — Couples hire once. The repeat audience is a short list of venues and planners; write to them directly a few times a year instead of running a newsletter product.

Core channel. Referrals dominate, but a blog catches couples who already know the venue. Guides say couples search by city, region or exact venue, and a photographer reported ranking on page one for venue names from real-wedding posts (SEO agency guides 2026; Photo Business Help 2025; anecdote). Venue pages also feed Pinterest and the Google profile, and vendors often link back to posts that credit them (photographer account, guides say). Vendor-written guides give 3 to 6 months before rankings move and up to 12 for crowded cities (promotional claims, not measured).

Real wedding at a named venue“[venue] wedding photographer”, “[venue] wedding photos”, “wedding at [venue] [city]”, “[venue] ceremony location photos”Title: venue, city and a plain description ('A summer ceremony at [Venue], [City]'). First 100 words: venue, city, season, ceremony type. Guides say 20 to 60 photos with a sentence of context around groups of them, and descriptive alt text. Add a short 'photographer's notes on this venue' (where the light falls, how long the first look took). Credit planner, florist and venue by name with links.
Venue photography guide“best photo spots at [venue]”, “[venue] wedding timeline”, “best time of day for wedding photos at [venue]”, “[venue] wedding photography guide”One page per venue you have shot at: three best spots with a photo each, best hour for ceremony light, rain plan, sample timeline for an eight-hour day, what the venue allows (flash, drones, backdrop). Ends with open dates and the inquiry form.
Wedding photographer cost and coverage“how much does a wedding photographer cost in [city]”, “how many hours of wedding photography do I need”, “wedding photography packages [city]”, “questions to ask a wedding photographer”Answer in the first lines: a typical range and what moves it (hours, second shooter, album, travel). Name the gap between sources (about $3,000 average citing The Knot, about $4,400 on Zola's marketplace, Paperlust 2026) and say where you sit. Show your packages or starting price, what is included, how booking works and a short FAQ.
Engagement session locations and outfits“engagement photo locations [city]”, “what to wear for engagement photos”, “engagement session ideas [city]”, “[park or landmark] engagement photos”A numbered list of 10 to 15 places, each with a photo, best hour, parking or access note and crowd level. Add an outfit section and a closing paragraph linking to your sessions. Publish before engagement season.
Elopement and destination guide“elopement locations in [state or region]”, “[national park] elopement permit”, “where to elope in [region]”, “[region] elopement photographer”Locations with best season, a sample day timeline, permit rules with a link to the park or land manager (rules differ park by park; see compliance), group-size limits, two real elopements with photos, and a cost outline.

When searches peak: Engagement season drives searches: about 40% of engagements fall between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day (The Knot 2018) and about 19% in December (InStore 2023-24). Publish cost, coverage and engagement-session guides in October so they have time to rank (guides say 3 to 6 months for movement). Publish venue recaps within two to three weeks of the wedding. October was 17% of weddings in 2023 and September 15% in 2024, while January and February were 2% each (The Knot), so the slow months are the time to write the backlog.

Local search: Google Business Profile as a service-area business: hide a home address, set the cities and venues you cover, use the real business name only and the fewest, most specific categories (Google guidelines). Reviews: ask every couple at gallery delivery and reply to all; 74% only consider reviews from the last three months and 89% expect owner replies (BrightLocal 2026). Keep the name, area and links the same on the website, Instagram bio and directory profiles.

Where businesses in this niche get featured and linked

  • Venue preferred-vendor lists and venue blogs (ask to be added; send the venue a gallery they can use)
  • Planner, florist and rental company blogs that credit the team on real-wedding posts
  • Junebug Weddings: takes real weddings and elopements and some styled shoots, not engagement sessions; members get priority, publication is not guaranteed (guidelines updated Jan 2021)
  • Junebug's Best of the Best contest (nearly 10,000 images entered in 2023)

WhenWhat matters
November to FebruaryEngagement season: about 40% of engagements fall between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day (The Knot 2018), about 19% in December (InStore 2023-24), and 25 December is the most popular proposal day (The Knot, undated page). Publish 'just engaged' cost and planning guides by October. Answer every inquiry the same day. Keep an auto-reply with your next three open dates.
January to MarchOnly 2% of weddings fall in January and February (The Knot 2024), so shooting is quiet. Edit and publish the backlog of real weddings, pitch publications, refresh the portfolio and Pinterest pins. A UK photographer reports last-minute bookers for the coming summer arrive in this window (single photographer, anecdote).
April to JuneShoot season starts; June was about 12% of weddings in 2024 (The Knot). Post a sneak peek within 48 hours and a full carousel within two weeks.

Partners who share your audience

  • Venues: get on the preferred-vendor list (82% of couples book the venue first, per The Knot Worldwide page citing its 2025 study, not checked against the study itself). Send the manager a gallery from a past wedding there and a one-page 'light and timeline' guide for the venue; Collab a post with the venue after every wedding there.
  • Planners and coordinators: they see the whole team and recommend photographers. Send a full gallery within a week of the wedding, credit them in the caption, invite them as the Collab co-author, and ask which couples they would like to meet.
  • Florists, hair and makeup, rentals, bakers, DJs: they post about the same couples. Tag each one (WeddingPro 2021: tagging encourages them to share) and send a small image set for their own use under a written licence.
  • Videographers: agree a shared shot list and who covers which moment; many couples now ask for social-first video (Zola 2026).
  • Second shooters and assistants: hire on a written agreement (see compliance); later a source of referrals when they go solo.
  • Publications: ask the planner or venue to co-submit a wedding so every credited vendor shares it.

Rules that apply

  • US, FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (effective 21 Oct 2024): do not write or buy fake reviews, do not pay for reviews that must be positive, disclose reviews by relatives, employees or other insiders (second shooters and assistants likely count as agents), and do not threaten couples to remove reviews. Source: FTC Q&A on the rule.
  • US, FTC Endorsement Guides: free or discounted services, gifts and commissions are a material connection. A styled shoot with traded work, or a free session for a post, needs a clear 'Gifted by' or 'Ad' near the claim; in video, say it and show it; tags like #ambassador are not enough. Source: FTC endorsement guides Q&A.
  • US National Parks (elopement and destination work): rules differ park by park. Indiana Dunes says the commercial photography permit is the photographer's responsibility, must be on site, and costs depend on the number of people and 'can be significant'; a special use permit is required for every wedding ceremony. A 2025 federal law (EXPLORE Act) is reported to exempt small, handheld shoots of eight or fewer people in public areas, but we did not confirm it on a park page, so check the park before relying on it. Source: NPS Indiana Dunes wedding FAQ; EXPLORE Act reports seen via search.
  • US copyright: the photographer is the author and owns the copyright unless it is assigned or made for hire in a signed written agreement. Use a written agreement with second shooters and a written licence when giving images to venues and vendors. Source: 17 U.S.C. 201.
  • EU and UK: photos of identifiable couples and guests are personal data. Marketing use needs a lawful basis, normally explicit consent in the contract, with a way to withdraw. Source: GDPR Articles 4, 6 and 7 (Regulation (EU) 2016/679);

What to measure

  • Inquiries per month by source (referral, Instagram, Google, Pinterest, directory), from 'How did you hear about us?'. Award-winning photographers self-report roughly 71% to 90% referrals (SLR Lounge, undated); your split will tell you where to invest.
  • Time to first reply to an inquiry: same day (responsiveness was key to trust for 52% of couples, The Knot 2026).
  • Inquiry-to-consultation and consultation-to-booking rates; no benchmark found, so set your own baseline in month 3.
  • Google reviews in the last three months and rating (74% only consider reviews from the last three months and 68% need 4+ stars, BrightLocal 2026).
  • Instagram engagement by format against 0.55% for carousels, 0.52% for Reels and 0.37% for images (Socialinsider 2025, all industries), plus sends and saves per reach (guides say).
  • Venue and planner Collabs per quarter and how many inquiries mention a venue or planner by name.
  • Search Console impressions and clicks on venue pages and cost pages.
  • Booked dates for the next 12 months compared with the same date last year (a tracking habit; no benchmark found).

Questions

Asked about wedding photographers

What is the best marketing channel for wedding photographers?

Instagram. Couples vet a photographer's portfolio on social media (Zola 2026) and 87% made planning choices based on it (Zola 2026). But only 19% of Millennials and 8% of Gen Z call Instagram the most essential platform (Zola 2026), so it is the shop window that confirms a recommendation, not the main discovery engine. Collab posts show on both profile grids and go to both sets of followers (HubSpot 2023), which puts…

How often should wedding photographers post on Instagram?

About 14 to 16 posts a month: 2 carousels and 1 to 2 Reels a week, Stories on shoot days, one Collab post per wedding. The average brand posts about 20 a month: 8 Reels, 5 carousels, 7 images (Socialinsider 2025).

Is X worth it for wedding photographers?

Usually not at the start: X is not among the sources couples name (Zola 2026) and photographers' work needs images and search, not a feed of short text.
