How to market an indie beauty or skincare brand in 2026

Indie beauty and skincare brands grow through Instagram, TikTok and an email newsletter. This blueprint sets out what to post and how often, the season, the rules on claims and reviews, and the first 90 days, from 32 sources checked in October 2026.

Where to show up

Core channels get most of the hours. Support channels get a little. The rest can wait until the core ones work.

ChannelRoleWhy
InstagramCore22% of US beauty shoppers have bought directly on Instagram, and it is where 47% of TikTok-first Gen Z would go if TikTok disappeared (Tinuiti 2025). Beauty has the lowest engagement of the industries Rival IQ tracks, on all four channels, so judge your posts against other beauty brands (Rival IQ 2025). Instagram says Reels are ranked on predicted reshares, full watches, likes and visits to the audio page, and Explore on likes, saves and shares (Instagram, May 2023).
TikTokCoreTikTok Shop made beauty an impulse channel: beauty and personal care was about 22% of US TikTok Shop sales in 2025 (Charm.io via Everything PR News, 2026), and 23% of US beauty shoppers, 54% of Gen Z, have bought directly on TikTok (Tinuiti 2025). TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in what it recommends; it ranks videos on likes, shares, follows and comments, plus captions, sounds and hashtags (TikTok, June 2020), so a new brand can reach strangers. The field is crowded: a PR agency counts 30,000+ beauty brands on TikTok Shop (5W, 2026; guides say).
Email newsletterCoreSkincare is a routine purchase, but only 17% of new customers of DTC health and beauty stores buy again within 180 days (Amp, year not stated), so email and SMS carry the second sale. Guides say email and SMS bring 25-35% of DTC revenue (Foundry, citing Klaviyo 2025).
PinterestSupport85% of weekly Pinterest users said they found new beauty trends or ideas there before seeing them elsewhere, and Pinterest added Beauty Guides that show people how to recreate a look (Pinterest Beauty Report 2026, via Social Media Today, Oct 2026). It works as a search tool, so a pin may keep bringing visitors for months (judgement, no measured figure). No Pinterest conversion figure for beauty was found.
YouTubeSupportYouTube was named first by 24% of people who discover beauty on social media, steady across ages (21% of Gen Z, 24% of boomers), and reviews are the most-watched beauty video type (Tinuiti 2025). 91% of US adults aged 30-49 use YouTube (Pew 2026). For a small team the win is getting disclosed reviews, not running a channel.
FacebookSupportFacebook was named most often (26%) by people who discover beauty on social media, mostly older shoppers, and 27% of beauty shoppers have bought directly on it (Tinuiti 2025). 78% of US adults aged 30-49 and 77% of women use it (Pew 2026). Paid social is how most DTC beauty brands scale; that is a judgement, not a measured figure.
RedditSupportReddit is where skincare shoppers ask for proof: r/SkincareAddiction alone has about 5.0M members (Hive Index, Oct 2026). Its wiki, as mirrored, bars company self-promotion in any form and bans outside surveys, so use Reddit to listen, not to post.
XSkipBeauty has the lowest engagement of the industries Rival IQ tracks, and X engagement across all industries fell 48% year on year in its 2025 report. Only 14% of US women use X, against 56% on Instagram and 43% on TikTok (Pew 2026).
LinkedInSkipBuyers are consumers. Use it only to approach retail buyers or recruiters, about one post a month.
ThreadsSkipNo evidence was found that Threads moves beauty sales. Cross-post only if it costs nothing.
QuoraSkipSkincare questions go to Reddit, TikTok and Google. No evidence found that Quora sends skincare buyers.
Google Business ProfileSkipAn online brand has no storefront to list. Use it only if you run a shop or studio.

Who buys and how they choose

People who buy skincare, makeup and body care and decide on proof: ingredients, reviews and creators they trust. Gen Z finds products on social media and often buys on impulse; older buyers lean on Facebook, YouTube, TV and stores (Tinuiti 2025: 62% of Gen Z vs 19% of baby boomers bought a beauty product they found on social media; 90% of Gen Z vs 41% of boomers bought on an influencer's recommendation). Price is the top influence (65%). About three in four say 'clean' (75%) and 'non-toxic' (77%) matter at least moderately, and 65% want clear ingredient lists (Tinuiti 2025, 1,003 US beauty shoppers, Jan 2025, covers beauty overall and not only skincare; NSF 2025 via Beauty Independent).

Trigger: a skin problem (breakouts, dryness, redness, dark spots), a new routine step, a season (sun, winter), a viral product or ingredient, or a gift. Research is short and social: a video, a review, a Reddit thread or an ingredient check, from minutes to a few days. Impulse buys are common on TikTok Shop and Amazon: the average order is $32 on TikTok Shop vs $77 at Sephora and $78 at Ulta (Earnest Analytics, 12 months to Mar 2025, via Beauty Independent). One person decides; partners and parents decide only for gifts. Skincare is a routine, so the second order is the real sale, and it is rare: 17% of new customers of DTC health and beauty stores buy again within 180 days (Amp, year not stated). Buyers are price-sensitive and learn to wait for sales; Truly Beauty's CEO advises against steep discounts (Beauty Independent, May 2025).

Where buyers find businesses like this

  • Social media first: Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram — Social media was the top source of beauty products later bought (38%), ahead of TV and in-store displays (31% each). Among people who discover on social, Facebook is named most often (26%), then YouTube (24%) and TikTok (17%); for Gen Z, TikTok is first (Tinuiti 2025, n=1,003, Jan 2025).
  • Creator reviews, tutorials, get-ready-with-me and haul videos — Reviews were the most-watched beauty video type, then tutorials; 21% regularly watch get-ready-with-me videos and 18% shopping hauls (Tinuiti 2025).
  • TikTok Shop — Beauty and personal care made $2.49B, about 22% of US TikTok Shop sales, in 2025 (Charm.io via Everything PR News, 2026); a PR agency puts beauty at roughly 22.5% of TikTok Shop's global GMV (5W, 2026). 23% of US beauty shoppers have bought directly on TikTok, and 54% of Gen Z (Tinuiti 2025).
  • Marketplace and retailer search: Amazon, Walmart, Sephora, Ulta — Amazon and Walmart drew more first searches than search engines, which came ahead of beauty retailers (Tinuiti 2025). 28% bought in a beauty retailer's store and 21% on its site (Tinuiti 2025).
  • Pinterest — 85% of weekly Pinterest users said they found new beauty trends or ideas there before seeing them elsewhere (Pinterest Beauty Report 2026, via Social Media Today, Oct 2026).
  • Google and searches for an ingredient or a problem — Indie brands with the biggest search growth in 2025 had a standout product, ingredient or price point; shoppers buy from unfamiliar names when reviews are credible and the product solves a clear problem (Spate data, Beauty Independent, Dec 2025).
  • Reddit skincare communities — r/SkincareAddiction has about 5.0M members; sunscreen was its most-posted product category in the month to 22 Oct 2026 and Routine Help was its most common flair (Hive Index, 22 Oct 2026).

The first 90 days

  1. Week 1

Sort every product into cosmetic, drug or both by what you say about it (SPF, acne and 'repair' wording turn a cosmetic into a drug).

Rewrite pages, packaging copy and captions to cosmetic claims only.

  2. Weeks 1-2

Build the compliance file for each market.

US: MoCRA listing unless exempt, safety substantiation, adverse-event contact on the label. EU and UK: a Responsible Person, safety report and notification. EU-bound pages: remove generic 'eco' and 'natural' wording.

  3. Week 2

Pick one hero product and one skin problem to own.

Shoot 12 short clips: textures, an application, a 14-day result, three ingredient answers, the founder on camera.

  4. Weeks 2-3

Rebuild the hero product page: full ingredient list, who should skip it, how much to use, a results timeline, photo reviews, and a post-purchase review request that goes to every buyer.

  5. Weeks 3-4

Set up email: a welcome series, a post-purchase usage guide and a refill reminder timed to the bottle size.

  6. Weeks 3-6

Seed 20-30 creators with a one-line brief and a disclosure rule; give each a code or link.

Scale to more only after the first batch sells.

  7. Weeks 5-8

Open TikTok Shop for the hero product, with a bundle so the order lands near $30-70 (where the brands in Beauty Independent's piece sell well); keep discounts to two or three moments a year.

  8. Weeks 6-10

Publish four guides (ingredient, concern, how-to, best-for) with a named expert reviewer, and cut 10 pins from them.

  9. Weeks 8-12

    Look at the numbers.

Which three creators and two formats sold? What is the repeat rate at day 60? Do more of those. Have Black Friday (27 Nov 2026) planned by early October. Apply to retail programmes only when you have sell-through data.

Instagram · core

22% of US beauty shoppers have bought directly on Instagram, and it is where 47% of TikTok-first Gen Z would go if TikTok disappeared (Tinuiti 2025).

Rhythm: 4 feed posts a week (2 Reels, 1 carousel, 1 photo or customer post), Stories 4 days a week, one live Q&A a month. Shoot in one batch every two weeks. Rival IQ 2025 found beauty brands posted nearly twice as many Reels as photos, yet photos earned the highest engagement, so keep photos in the mix.

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Concern-and-routine carousel30%Slide 1: the problem in the buyer's words ('Why does my moisturiser pill?'). Slide 2: who it is for and who should skip it. Slides 3-5: the routine in order, AM and PM, with product and amount. Slide 6: what to expect and by when, honestly. Slide 7: 'Save this for tonight' and one link to the guide. — Saves and shares are the signals Instagram names for Explore (Instagram 2023), and a routine is something people keep.
Ingredient in 45 seconds25%0-2s: the question as on-screen text. 2-10s: what the ingredient does, in one plain sentence. 10-30s: texture and how to apply, on skin, no filter. 30-40s: who should not use it or what not to mix it with. 40-45s: 'Full guide on our site'. — Tutorials and reviews are the most-watched beauty videos (Tinuiti 2025), and saying who should skip it builds the trust that 'clean' and 'non-toxic' shoppers look for.
Real skin, real time15%One person, same light and angle each time, no filter or retouching. Show day 1, week 2, week 4 and say what else changed (other products, sun, season). Say if the product was gifted. — Filters that exaggerate a product's effect are treated as misleading in the UK and the advertiser carries the duty to prove otherwise (ASA/CAP, Feb 2021). In the US, if you cannot show the result is typical you must say what people generally get (FTC Endorsement Guides Q&A).
Shade swatches and wear test (makeup)10% (makeup brands)Swatches on at least three skin tones in daylight, one hand per tone. Then a morning-to-evening wear check at 8 hours with one cut to the face. Put the shade name on screen for every swatch. — Shoppers cannot try shades in a store online; 34% have used filters or other tech to preview a product on themselves, 55% of Gen Z (Tinuiti 2025). Do the preview yourself, honestly.
Customer post reshare10%Their photo or video and their words, with written permission. Add skin type, how long they have used it and the routine. Tag them. Mark gifted items as gifted. — Real-user proof. The FTC says you are responsible for what others say on your behalf, and free products must be disclosed (FTC Endorsement Guides Q&A).
Founder or formulator on camera10%One formula choice and the reason (why this percentage, why this packaging). Answer one real comment. Close with the product name and nothing more. — Explains a price above mass market; judgement, no measured figure.

What to post about

  • Skin concerns explained in plain words (breakouts, redness, dryness, dark spots, texture)
  • Ingredients without hype: what it does, who should skip it
  • Routine order and layering
  • Sun care habits
  • Texture and application close-ups
  • Customer results with context
  • Founder choices: formula, packaging, price

Openings that work

  • A question in the buyer's words: 'Why does my moisturiser pill?'
  • The mistake: 'The retinol mistake that makes your skin sting'
  • Myth-bust: 'You do not need ten steps. You need these three.'
  • Dated proof: 'Week 4 of one serum, no filter'
  • Either/or: 'Niacinamide or vitamin C first?'

How people find you here: Instagram search reads captions, on-screen text and alt text, so put the concern and ingredient words in the first line ('niacinamide for oily skin'); guides say. Guides also say hashtags have mattered little for reach since 2025. Invite a creator as a Collab co-author so the post shows on both profiles and reaches both followings. Reels and Explore reach strangers on reshares, full watches, likes and saves (Instagram 2023).

How a viewer becomes a client: One link in bio to the hero product page, not the home page. A Stories link sticker on every routine post. A comment-keyword DM ('comment ROUTINE') that sends the product page and a short skin-type quiz (33% of beauty shoppers have used a quiz or questionnaire for personalised recommendations, Tinuiti 2025). A first-order code and a mini size for people unsure about price. Photo reviews on the product page. 22% of beauty shoppers have bought directly on Instagram (Tinuiti 2025).

Benchmarks: Rival IQ 2025 (150 companies per industry, 4M+ posts, published 25 Feb 2025): Health & Beauty had the lowest engagement of its industries on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X, 'far below the all-industry median'. Photos earned the highest Instagram engagement.

Avoid on Instagram

  • Say a product treats, heals or cures acne, eczema or rosacea, or 'regenerates cells'. In the US those are drug claims (FDA), and a cosmetic that makes them needs drug approval.
  • Post results shot with a filter or retouching. The UK ASA ruled such filters misleading in tanning ads and held the advertiser responsible (ASA/CAP, 2021).
  • Show before and after photos taken in different light, angle or make-up, or without saying what else changed.
  • Use 'eco-friendly', 'green', 'natural' or 'climate neutral' on EU-facing posts without proof; generic claims like these are restricted from 27 Sept 2026 (Directive 2024/825).
  • Repost a creator's gifted post that lacks a clear disclosure. The brand is responsible for what others do on its behalf (FTC).
  • Buy followers or engagement: the FTC rule bans using fake social media indicators (16 CFR 465.8, in force 21 Oct 2024).

TikTok · core

TikTok Shop made beauty an impulse channel: beauty and personal care was about 22% of US TikTok Shop sales in 2025 (Charm.io via Everything PR News, 2026), and 23% of US beauty shoppers, 54% of Gen Z, have bought directly on TikTok (Tinuiti 2025).

Rhythm: 3-4 videos a week to start. Make two yourself (founder or formulator on camera, a product demo) and source the rest from creators. TikTok's acting head of personal care tells small brands to focus seeding and content on one or two products (Beauty Independent, May 2025). Add live shopping only when one video format already sells; Truly Beauty ran 3-4 lives a week at launch, which is a full-time job.

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Problem, product, proof demo35%0-2s: the problem on screen ('My skin flakes under foundation'). 2-8s: product in hand with the price visible. 8-20s: apply it, close-up on texture, no filter. 20-28s: the same skin later (day 3 or day 14, say which). 28-30s: one-line prompt to the shop link. — Product-launch hashtags drove the top TikTok engagement for beauty brands (Rival IQ 2025). Products priced $30-70 sell well on the platform (Truly Beauty, in Beauty Independent, May 2025).
Creator seeding reviews (affiliate videos)30% of what you post or reshareSend one or two hero products with a one-line brief: say how you used it, show the texture, say it was a gift, make no medical claims. Ask for a shop affiliate link or ad code. Reshare the best ones. — Seeding returns about 3x after about 90 days, per TikTok's acting head of personal care. Abi Amé (body care) seeds about 100 products a month to a small group of creators and reports GMV up 10x since Jan 2025 (Beauty Independent, May 2025).
Stitch or reply to a question or myth15%Stitch a viral claim ('Does vitamin C burn?'). Answer in 15 seconds with the formulator on camera. Show the product only in the last 3 seconds. — Abi Amé said stitches drove seven of its next ten viral moments (Beauty Independent, May 2025).
Routine or get-ready-with-me15%Real morning routine in order, product names on screen, price of the whole routine said out loud, one honest 'skip this step if' line. — 21% of beauty shoppers regularly watch get-ready-with-me videos (Tinuiti 2025).
Live shoppingas capacity allows10-15 minutes, one hero set, one offer, answer comments by name, pin the product. — Canvas Beauty made $1M in one livestream and $2M in one Black Friday livestream; Truly's 10-15 minute flash sales are a small share of its sales (Beauty Independent, May 2025). Treat these as top cases, not plans.

What to post about

  • Hero product in a daily routine
  • A problem and its fix
  • Ingredient myths
  • Routine and get-ready-with-me
  • Creator reviews and hauls (18% of beauty shoppers watch hauls, Tinuiti 2025)
  • Founder story and why the price is what it is

Openings that work

  • Result first: 'Day 14, no filter. Here is what changed.'
  • Price shock: 'This costs $38. Here is why.'
  • Myth: 'Vitamin C does not burn your face. This does.'
  • Reply to a comment: 'You asked if it pills under sunscreen.'
  • Quiz: 'Pick your skin type, then watch the routine.'

How people find you here: TikTok recommends by ranking videos on the viewer's interactions, video information (captions, sounds, hashtags) and device and account settings, which carry less weight (TikTok, June 2020). Put the concern words in the first line of the caption and on screen. Product-launch hashtags drove the top beauty engagement (Rival IQ 2025). Affiliate creators bring the product to their own audiences, so you do not need followers first.

How a viewer becomes a client: Link the hero product on the video through TikTok Shop and pay affiliates a commission. After seeding, scale the winning videos with paid ads (TikTok's Rhodes names GMV Max; Beauty Independent, May 2025). Keep price points at $30-70 and discount only two or three times a year (Truly Beauty and Abi Amé, Beauty Independent, May 2025).

Benchmarks: Average order: TikTok Shop $32, Sephora $77, Ulta $78; orders per customer: 7.2 on TikTok Shop, 2.8 Sephora, 3.3 Ulta (Earnest Analytics, 12 months to Mar 2025, via Beauty Independent). Return on ad spend of 4-5 is respectable and about 10 is top (Truly Beauty CEO); paid ads can take up to 90 days to ramp. Seeding returns about 3x after about 90 days (TikTok's own claim). All from Beauty Independent, May 2025.

Avoid on TikTok

  • Make medical claims. TikTok Shop restricts claims to diagnose, cure or treat, as guides describe it;
  • Discount deeply to chase volume. The brands in Beauty Independent's piece sell at $30-70 and keep discounts to two or three moments a year (May 2025).
  • Send product to hundreds of creators with no brief. The creator must disclose the gift and the FTC holds the brand responsible for what they say.
  • Post a result video with a beauty filter on.
  • Treat TikTok Shop like Sephora: orders average $32, so a cheap single-use product needs a bundle or a refill email to pay back (judgement).

Email newsletter · core

Skincare is a routine purchase, but only 17% of new customers of DTC health and beauty stores buy again within 180 days (Amp, year not stated), so email and SMS carry the second sale. Guides say email and SMS bring 25-35% of DTC revenue (Foundry, citing Klaviyo 2025).

Rhythm: Build automated flows first (welcome, post-purchase, replenishment, review request, win-back), then one campaign every 1-2 weeks. About 2 hours a week once the flows run.

FormatShareHow a good one is built
Welcome series (3 emails)flowEmail 1: the offer and the hero product with its routine step. Email 2: the founder or formulator story and an honest 'who should skip this'. Email 3: photo reviews and a skin-type guide. — Turns a social follower into a first order.
Post-purchase usage guideflowDay 0: how to use, how much, when to expect results (an honest timeline). Day 7: check-in and how to reach support. Day 21-28: review request and a refill reminder timed to the bottle size. — Repeat purchase is the weakest number in the category (17% in 180 days, Amp).
Campaign: routine, season or restockcampaignOne problem, one product, three proof points, one button. — Keeps the list warm between orders.

Openings that work

  • Subject: 'Your serum is half empty. Reorder before it runs out.'
  • Subject: 'The one step people skip with this'
  • Subject: 'Week 2: what to expect on your skin'

How people find you here: Sign-up box offering a skin-type quiz result and a first-order code; sign-up link in bios, on carousels and on pins.

How a viewer becomes a client: Flow emails go to the product page with the routine step for that stage; refill reminders go straight to a one-click reorder.

Benchmarks: New-customer average order $50-55 and 17% repeat within 180 days for DTC health and beauty stores (Amp, year not stated). Email and SMS 25-35% of DTC revenue (Foundry citing Klaviyo 2025; guides say).

Avoid on Email newsletter

  • Offer a reward that depends on a positive review, or send review requests only to happy customers (FTC reviews rule, 16 CFR 465.4, in force 21 Oct 2024).
  • Let 'my skin reacted' emails sit: under MoCRA a serious adverse event must be reported to FDA within 15 business days, so route them to a named person the same day.

  • Lead with the mechanism, not the product: 'Pilling usually means two layers are fighting each other. Try waiting two minutes between them.'

How people find you here: Your brand name comes up in Reddit threads whether or not you take part. Search 'your brand + reddit' once a month and note what people say, good and bad.

How a viewer becomes a client: None directly. Reddit research shapes your claims, your FAQ and your product pages.

Avoid on Reddit

  • Post links to your shop or blog in skincare subreddits, or use a brand account to answer.
  • Ask for upvotes, run surveys or start an AMA without moderator approval.
  • Pose as a customer; the FTC bans insider reviews without disclosure (16 CFR 465.5).

Channels to leave for later

  • X — Beauty has the lowest engagement of the industries Rival IQ tracks, and X engagement across all industries fell 48% year on year in its 2025 report. Only 14% of US women use X, against 56% on Instagram and 43% on TikTok (Pew 2026).
  • LinkedIn — Buyers are consumers. Use it only to approach retail buyers or recruiters, about one post a month.
  • Threads — No evidence was found that Threads moves beauty sales. Cross-post only if it costs nothing.
  • Quora — Skincare questions go to Reddit, TikTok and Google. No evidence found that Quora sends skincare buyers.
  • Google Business Profile — An online brand has no storefront to list. Use it only if you run a shop or studio.

Support channel. Shoppers search for the ingredient or the problem before they buy, and search growth follows a standout product, ingredient or price (Spate data, Beauty Independent, Dec 2025). But Amazon and Walmart now take the first search for many shoppers (Tinuiti 2025), so a blog will not carry sales alone. Its job is to answer the questions you keep getting in DMs and to give creators and search engines a page to point to.

Partners who share your audience

  • Micro-creators (10K-250K followers) are the engine of TikTok Shop and Instagram reach. A PR agency's playbook asks for 750+ micro-creators (10K-250K followers) and 250+ seeded products a month for brands competing on TikTok Shop (5W, 2026; guides say); a team of 2-10 should treat that as a ceiling. A narrow model also works: Abi Amé seeds about 100 products a month to a small creator group (Beauty Independent, May 2025).
  • Dermatologists and estheticians as reviewers or advisers. Anyone who promotes your product must disclose the connection (FTC Endorsement Guides Q&A). The same 5W playbook asks for 30+ 'dermfluencers' (500K-10M followers) per 90-day cycle for large programmes (5W, 2026; guides say).
  • Retail programmes: Sephora Accelerate (a six-month programme with mentorship, merchandising help and funding, applications open each spring) and Ulta Beauty's MUSE Accelerator. Both have focused on founders of color and change their rules, so check the current ones (Beauty Independent, Retail Dive and Business Wire coverage, 2022-2025). Guides say retail buyers check TikTok Shop sales trend, Amazon review count and creator-to-purchase conversion before a meeting (5W, 2026).
  • Complementary brands (for example a sunscreen with a barrier moisturiser) for co-seeding and giveaways. Use Instagram Collab posts so the post sits on both profiles.
  • Spas, clinics and estheticians as stockists and sample partners (judgement, no source).

Rules that apply

  • US, cosmetic or drug (FDA): intended use is judged from labels, ads, websites and what buyers expect. Claims such as reducing cellulite, regenerating cells or changing melanin production make a product a drug; sunscreen and acne-treatment claims are drug claims too, and a product can be both (FDA, page current Sept 2024).
  • US: FDA has no list of approved cosmetic claims and cannot approve claims before sale. Claims must be truthful and not misleading, and the FTC polices advertising (FDA, Nov 2022).
  • US, MoCRA: the responsible person must keep safety substantiation records and report serious adverse events to FDA within 15 business days, with a copy of the label. Manufacturers register facilities and renew every two years; each product is listed and updated yearly. Small businesses (average US cosmetic sales under $1M over the prior 3 years, inflation-adjusted) are exempt from registration and listing, but not if a product touches the eye, is injected, is for internal use or changes appearance for over 24 hours (FDA MoCRA page, current Aug 2026; threshold from Registrar Corp).
  • US label: product identity and net quantity on the front panel; firm name and address; ingredients in descending order. If safety is not substantiated, the label must say so (FDA, Nov 2025).
  • US, FTC: disclose free products, discounts and commissions inside the post itself; a platform tool alone is not enough. 'Results not typical' is not a free pass: if you cannot show the result is typical you must say what people generally get (FTC Disclosures 101, Nov 2019; Endorsement Guides Q&A).
  • US, FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials rule (in force 21 Oct 2024): no fake or bought reviews, no incentives tied to the sentiment of a review, insider reviews must disclose the link, no review suppression, no fake followers (FTC, Nov 2024).
  • US states: California bans 24 listed chemicals in cosmetics from 1 Jan 2025 (AB 2762: 13 PFAS and 11 others, such as formaldehyde, mercury, certain phthalates and parabens; ArentFox Schiff, 2020). California, Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington ban intentionally added PFAS in cosmetics from 1 Jan 2025; Maine and Vermont from 1 Jan 2026, and more states follow (Morgan Lewis, Dec 2025). Neither source mentions a small-business exemption. Check Minnesota's current reporting deadline.
  • EU: a Responsible Person, a safety report and notification before sale are required (Regulation (EU) 1223/2009). Every claim must meet six common criteria: legal compliance, truthfulness, evidential support, honesty, fairness and informed decision-making (Regulation (EU) No 655/2013).
  • EU green claims: since 27 Sept 2026, generic claims such as 'eco-friendly', 'natural', 'biodegradable' and 'green' need recognised excellent environmental performance; 'climate neutral' claims based on offsets are banned; sustainability labels must rest on a certification scheme or public authority (Directive (EU) 2024/825; European Commission page for the date, Cooley and CMS for the content).
  • UK: every product must be notified through the OPSS SCPN service before sale in Great Britain, with a UK Responsible Person; the product file and safety report are kept for 10 years; serious undesirable effects go on a separate form (GOV.UK).
  • UK, ASA: filters or retouching that exaggerate what a product does are misleading, and the advertiser must hold evidence and is responsible (ASA/CAP, Feb 2021). Before and after pictures are treated as testimonials: show they are typical and unaltered (CAP guidance via Osborne Clarke).
  • TikTok Shop: as guides describe it, claims to diagnose, cure or treat are restricted, and some skincare listings need compliance documents; confirm in Seller Center.

What to measure

  • Repeat purchase within 180 days: the average for DTC health and beauty stores is 17% of new customers (Amp, year not stated). Beat it with refill reminders.
  • New-customer average order: $50-55 for DTC health and beauty stores (Amp). TikTok Shop averages $32 (Earnest Analytics via Beauty Independent), so test bundles.
  • Return on ad spend: 4-5 is respectable and about 10 is top on TikTok Shop (Truly Beauty CEO, Beauty Independent, May 2025).
  • Seeding payback: about 3x after about 90 days is TikTok's own claim; check it against your cost of product plus shipping per creator.
  • Share of revenue from email and SMS: guides say 25-35% for DTC stores (Foundry citing Klaviyo 2025).
  • Engagement: compare with beauty peers, not all industries, because beauty is the lowest (Rival IQ 2025).
  • Reviews: count with photos, average rating, and share of buyers asked (the target is all of them).
  • Compliance: serious adverse event reports filed within 15 business days, and the date of the last claims audit.
